In addition to a cash prize of $300 and a plaque, the Prize represents the attainment of the highest achievement among the international community of scientists working on the biology and evolution of the beetles.
Nominations from the scientific community at-large and a distinguished panel of world leaders of the coleopterist community are judged by a Selection Committee of top researchers.
This award, in the form of a plaque, is presented each year at the annual meeting of the Coleopterists Society for the best paper published in the Coleopterists Bulletin from the preceding year.

 The Fertig Family Tallgrass Prairie
Andrew Schmidt will conduct a beetle survey of the Fertig Tallgrass Prairie for the next four years (summers of 2002-2005) with the intention of having a permanent collection of identified beetles located at the Schuyler Central High School and at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln.
He applied for and won the 2001 Youth Incentive Award given by the Coleopterists Society and will use the $150 that he received for the award to help with the purchase of equipment used for the survey.
The Coleopterists Society, an international organization of professionals and hobbyists interested in the study of beetles, has established a program to recognize young people studying beetles.

Two publications have been essential to every coleopterist, amateur or professional, interested in the beetle fauna of the continental USA.
They are The Coleopterists’ Bulletin, founded by Ross Arnett in 1947 (the apostrophe was omitted later from the title), and The Beetles of the United States (a Manual for Identification) (BOTUS) written by Ross Arnett and published (first edition) in 1960-1963 by Catholic University of America Press (now out of print).
He has done a valuable service to coleopterists by producing it, and they should reciprocate by buying it and helping him to improve it.

 Breckland Coleoptera
Historically, Breckland was lumped together with other heathland regions and dismissed by many coleopterists as being a poor hunting ground for beetles.
While heathland may not appear to hold the number of beetle species seen in other habitats, coleopterists now realize the importance of heathland as a habitat for beetles.
