The Variety Hour's salute to theatrical legend George Abbott came in a distant third with a dismal 7.2.
Replaced with the poorly conceived NBC Comedy Hour, featuring unlikely host Leo Durocher, one of the most lavish, entertaining and at times extraordinary musical variety series in television history was just a memory.
In May 1967 NBC presented a Colgate Comedy Hour revival but it was a revival in name only--not in format or in star value.

The Colgate Comedy Hour was an American musical variety television show that ran on the NBC network from November 1950 to December 1955.
It was heavily backed by its sponsor, Colgate-Palmolive-Peet to the tune of $3 million in the first year, and the 8:00 pm Sunday evening format show was a spectacular success, particularly for Cantor and the Martin-Lewis, Abbott-Costello duos.
In November 1967, NBC broadcsast a special Colgate Comedy Hour Revival with guests Nanette Fabray, Kaye Ballard, Edie Adams, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Phyllis Diller, Bob Newhart, Nipsey Russell, Dan Rowan and Dick Martin, none of whom had performed in the original show.

But their debut on THE COLGATE COMEDY HOUR showed the team near its peak, doing several of their most well known bits ("Mustard" aka "Hole in the Wall," "The Sanitarium," "Find the Lemon") live, with all of the spontaneity that this implies.
The show is followed by a beautiful copy of the Abbott and Costello 1952 appeal for Christmas Seals, co-starring Charles Laughton, who was co-starring with the duo in Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kid, arguably the last of their good costume adventure/comedies.

Bud and Lou had some stints on the Colgate comedy hour, but I do not feel as if this represented their best work (far from it).
The colgate stuff gets more interesting when they perform more original material, like the scenes where the boys have wives or the show where Lizabeth Scott appears.
The Charles Laughton episode was fun where the boys plugged "Jack and the beanstalk" (which was actually filmed about a year earlier).

In 1954, for the first time, The Comedy Hour didn't take a break for the summer.
Instead, a series of "travel" musicals was presented with alternating casts headed by Kaye Ballard and Bobby Van on alternating coasts.
"If Sunday's premier entry is to be accepted as a criterion for the summer run," it wrote, "then perhaps Colgate should have put Comedy Hour on ice pending the new fall season." The episode originated from New York.
