  COLIGNY CALENDAR
He further speculated that the information recorded on the calendar was compiled by Gallic druids who wished to preserve the ancient Celtic system of timekeeping, at the time when the Julian calendar was being rigorously enforced throughout the entire Roman empire, around the turn of the first century AD.
Two of the main Celtic religious festivals Beltain and Lughnasadh were indicated on the Coligny calendar by small sigils, and each year started with the month of Samonios, during which period the festival of Samhain was celebrated.
Though not confirmed by the Coligny inscriptions, we also know that in accordance with general Celtic custom, which was itself adopted from the ancient Greek observance, each day was reckoned to last from sunset to sunset; not midnight to midnight as our modern Roman calendar dictates.

The so-called "Calendar of Coligny" is a fragmented bronze plaque that was found in 1897 in the remains of a Roman Temple of Apollo in Coligny, Ain, France.
Some people have suggested that since the "Celts" always began their months at the new moon, that this meant that the major festivals would be held under the full moon.

 The Calendar of Coligny
The Coligny Calendar is thought to have first been fabricated in about 50 A.D. or about 100-years after the Romans made their unwelcome incursion into the affairs of Gaul under Julius Caesar.
The fragmented Calendar of Coligny was destined to sleep undisturbed in its hiding place for many centuries until a time when it could emerge into world that would wish to preserve it.
These indicate that significant milestones have been reached in the count of days and that, either, the moment arrived at within the calendar cycle is of great importance, or else the "number" exhibited is one of the special ones, much used in the general calculation endeavours of their ancient society.

 BBC - h2g2 - The Celtic Calender
This calendar, fragments of bronze inscribed with the days months and years of the Celtic world dates from the late first century and was found in Coligny in Ain, France.
The Coligny evidence does however give us a unique overview of how the Celts saw time itself, the ebb and flow of the year, and how those years fitted into a larger chronological picture.
The sixteen columns of the Coligny Calendar are each divided into four lunar months (alternating 29 and 30 days in length) to a column — except however the fifth and ninth columns each contain two lunar months and an additional third intercalary month.

With the discovery of the Calendar of Coligny it became clear that astronomy was currently practised by the Celts, at least among the druidic class.
In this context we must remark that the calendar of Coligny embodies a mathematical model that require an excellent, but empirical, knowledge of the geocentric theory of the Lunar motion as well as some very good empirical ideas on the laws regulating the apparent motion of the Sun in the sky.
The table of Coligny suggests the existence of an intercalary month of 30 days to add after 2.5 lunar years within the cycle of five years.

In ancient Egypt and Babylonia, in China and Hindostan, and again on the American Continent, among the Aztecs or the ancient Peruvians, definite traces have been found of a more or less elaborate calculation of seasons serving as a basis for religious observances.
In 1897, a remarkable discovery was made at Coligny in the department of Ain, France, when certain inscribed stone slabs were brought to light in which all are agreed in recognizing an ancient Celtic calendar, probably pre-Christian, though the precise interpretation of the details still remains a matter of lively controversy.
Again, both Greece and Rome possessed highly developed calendars, and the Fasti of Ovid, for example, preserve a detailed description in verse of the chief celebrations of the Roman year.

Other documentary sources allow us to plug the gaps that Coligny doesn't give us.
Further to this we can establish from other matirial sources how certain sites were used at different times of year and how their design reflected their function.

The two incised stones, and several others bearing ancient inscriptions, were found within 300-feet (100 metres) of each other.
The layout of the 64-square matrix stone is very reminiscent of the ancient Druidic Calendar of Coligny of Ain, France, which used a 64-square, chessboard design (doubling to 128-squares) for lunisolar calendar calculations.
