As principal creditor he obtained in October 167 2, from George, 6th earl of Caithness, a conveyance of his dignities, lands and heritable jurisdictions; and after the latter's death he was created on the 28th of June 1677 earl of Caithness and viscount of Breadalbane.
Accordingly, together with Argyll and Sir John Dalrymple (afterwards Lord Stair), Breadalbane organized the atrocious crime known as the "Massacre of Glencoe," when the unfortunate MacDonalds, deceived by assurances of friendship, and at the moment when they were lavishing their hospitality upon their murderers, were butchered in cold blood on the 13th of February 1692.
This earl was a diplomatist, being British ambassador to Denmark and to Russia, and a politician, being for a long time a member of the House of Commons and a supporter of Sir Robert Walpole, in addition to holding several official positions.

Archibald Campbell, 5th Earl of Argyll (1532/1537 - 1573/1575) was a leading figure in the politics of Scotland during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots and the early part of that of James VI.
Argyll was tied to the assassinations of both David Rizzio in 1566 and of the King himself in 1567, and was horrified by the Queen's marriage to James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell.
Argyll, in his role as Campbell clan chief, was also heavily involved in the politics of Ulster during the 1560s.

Archibald, the 2nd Earl was killed at Flodden in 1513 and was the first of the family to be granted the appointment of Master of the Royal Household in Scotland, a priveledge still held by the Duke today.
The 8th Earl was thrown in the tower and subsequently executed for taking the side of Oliver Cromwell over Charles 2nd and the fortunes of the House of Argyll were down until the Glorious Revolution in 1688.
The 10th Earl was granted the Dukedom in 1701 due to the regiment he raised for the crown, known as the Earl of Argyle's Regiment of Foot.
