 Amazon.ca: Archaeology: Books: Colin Renfrew
While Renfrew and Bahn position themselves as heirs to all the different schools of archaeology, they do in fact, pick and choose the archaeologists (and the theoretical paradigms they support) quite specifically.
Renfrew and Bahn are not really presenting a synthesis of old and new approaches to archaeology, but the old dressed up in a new party dress (one that doesn't fit too well at that).
Renfrew and Bahn do a pretty good job presenting their point of view but it's a point of view not a law of physics.

Lord Colin Renfrew presented the John and Penelope Biggs lecture in the Classics at Washington University today, speaking on "Becoming Human: The Cognitive Archaeology of Humankind." His talk had two major components.
Renfrew notes that Darwin is very helpful when we’re examining speciation, but the history of homo sapien is of very tiny genetic changes and massive cultural changes.
However, Lord Renfrew made the explicit caveat that neuroscience is still "in its infancy" and that one of the lessons of archaeology is that the brain isn’t everything (I suppose the mind is, under his definition of the mind).

 Renaissance Online Magazine [Books]
Renfrew notes his discontent with the theories he was taught at university about wholesale movements of populations across Europe and western Asia, and points out that there is very little archaeological evidence of this that can be both dated firmly and certainly identified with a particular people.
Renfrew goes on to doubt that the steppes of Southern Russia are truly the Indo-European homeland, placing it instead in Anatolia, whence the language and culture spread as agriculture was adopted by small groups of farmers moving just a few kilometers at a time.
Renfrew's arguments are persuasive, but not conclusive - at least, not to me. I also found myself wishing, around page 200, that he had not duplicated examples, giving the impression that the chapters had been written at different times, each intended to stand alone if need be.

EDGE 3rd Culture: A TALK WITH COLIN RENFREW
Much of Colin Renfrew's early work was in the field of European prehistory, looking at processes of culture change, and he came to realize that many of the diffusionist ideas current in the fifties and sixties were based on assumptions which undervalued the originality and the creativity of the cultures of prehistoric Europe.
Innovations were often seen as originating in the Near East and spreading to Europe by a process of diffusion.
This has led to a wider interest in the prehistory of languages, and the implications which the distribution of language families in the world carry for our understanding of the prehistoric past.

Amazon.com: Archaeology and Language: The Puzzle of Indo-European Origins: Books: Colin Renfrew
It is a daring thesis … Renfrew is not afraid of dealing with big problems...an attempt to move archaeology forward and to break its isolation … he has started another of those debates on which progress in archaeology depends.' Richard Bradley, Nature
In this book Colin Renfrew directs remarkable new light on the links between archaeology and language, looking specifically at the puzzling similarities that are apparent across the Indo-European family of ancient languages, from Anatolia and Ancient Persia, across Europe and the Indian subcontinent, to regions as remote as Sinkiang in China.
Professor Renfrew initiates an original synthesis between modern historical linguistics and the new archaeology of cultural process, boldly proclaiming that it is time to reconsider questions of language origins and what they imply about ethnic affiliation--issues seriously discredited by the racial theorists of the 1920s and 1930s and, as a result, largely neglected since.

Cambridge Archaeology Professor Colin Renfrew accused museums such as these and private collectors of "indirectly funding the looting of archaeological sites" in a lecture last night at the University Museum.
But he argued that the biggest loss from looting is the historical knowledge that archaeologists lose when these objects are removed from their original context.
Renfrew commended the University Museum, which he said has already "taken a public stand" on the issue.

RENFREW: If you're looking at the Southeast Asia hominids it does look, to the very casual eye, and indeed to the very specialized eye, when Wolpoff and his colleagues get going, that there are some local features that you see in Homo Erectus that seem to be carried through into Homo Sapiens.
