		Smith, that was oncologist Dr. Alan Newman of San Francisco, and she credited him with the gift of bringing joy into the lives of his patients while prolonging her life for more than seven years beyond that dire initial diagnosis.
		Smith was born in Minneapolis, Minn. She graduated in 1971 from Buchser High School in Santa Clara, and later attended San Jose State University.
		Smith is survived by her husband, Colin Smith, and by their three daughters, Colette, Irene and Lily.
