  An Introduction to Colin Wilson
As a result, Wilson's pursuit of his ideas have led him, over the course of more than forty years of intensive labor, to critique and formulate new ideas in a broad range of subjects, ranging from the works of the Romantics, the existentialists and split-brain psychology to criminology, science fiction, mysticism and revolutionary archaeology.
Wilson's contention, however, is the exact reverse: it is the peak experience which gives us a brief moment of clarity about the surrounding world, and the drabness of our everyday perceptions is the illusion.
Wilson's readers are frequently those who have a sense that there is a possibility for something greater in the nature of our existence, but who also recognize that theorizing alone achieves nothing, particularly when theories ignore the realities known to those of us who must interrupt our questing with the facts of functioning within society.

However, Wilson is a prolific contemporary Englishman who has spent a lifetime in research and writing on all things occult, and whose work we owe a debt of gratitude.
Wilson himself seeks to inform us that psychic powers are as normal to man's intelligence as learning the multiplication tables in grammar school.

In l956 Wilson's Outsider was an overnight success, and later went into twelve impressions, the youthful looking 26 year-old was hailed by the critics as a new Lord Byron.
Later in the seventies Wilson's writing turned more towards mysticism and the occult which was a natural transition as many of his novels and works of philosophy foreshadowed its basic concepts, transforming him into one of the New Age prophets.
While Colin Wilson had been transforming his ideas and philosophies I had travelled to Australia in 1965 where I worked variously as night watchman, roustabout in pubs and read all the philosophy I could lay my hands on in the elusive search for truth.

Colin revealed that for many years he had been keeping a diary on tape every morning, which now ran to hundreds of tapes containing a vast amount of material about his life and work.

With Wilson’s autobiography published recently, GARY LACHMAN met the prolific writer to discuss a prodigious output and an overdraft to match.
Beginning with an account of his attempted suicide at the age of 16, the 73-year-old Wilson introduces us to the central obsession of his life: the search for a method of increasing the powers of consciousness at will, a theme that links the many, otherwise disparate, subjects in his considerable œuvre.
Wilson is also refreshingly candid about the role of sex in his life, discussing in detail early exploits in the coffee bars of 1950s Soho, and later adventures when fame increased his opportunities to satisfy an already healthy appetite.

Wilson is - in a sense - an awful lot like a Jim Lovelock who took a wrong turn somwhere and never focused in on any subject long enough to bring to fruition a deep understanding.
But, whereas Wilson started by writing "The Outsider", Lovelock began his career in earnest with the invention of the Electron Capture Detector - a device which didn't really quite work for the purposes Lovelock originally designed it for but, instead, proved uncannily accurate at detecting pollution in extremely minute quantities, parts per billion.
Wilson would have done well to take the cue, earlier in his career in terms of his interest in psychology, mysticism, spiritualism, and existentialism (lots of isms there, eh?), from Stan Grof or Charles Tart.

COLIN: If Tim Leary's claim was that you could, use the psychedelic experience to find your way into new realms of subjectivity, and then use it to find your way back there without the psychedelic, I would agree, it would be extremely valuable.
I mentioned yesterday, one of the things that struck me a long time ago, is that if you look at writers, the ones who produced something interesting and significant have been, in fact, the writers who have been forced to struggle like mad from difficult beginnings.

Colin was struck by the thought, that many of his literary heroes in fiction had found themselves in similar positions to that of his own dilemma, alone and struggling to stay afloat at the edge of society, it was a sink or swim situation.
Colin is also a respected international speaker who has lectured all around the world and can often be seen contributing to programmes on both television and radio.
Colin regretted not having ‘discovered’ Lethbridge much earlier, for he believed that he was a key figure in the world of the paranormal, and his contribution to psychical research was enormous and therefore needed acknowledging.

I've read several Colin Wilson books and what keeps amazing is that each and every one i've read is like "progress" for me, a personal progress, he functions like a keymaster handing out keys to those interested, and the fact that his writting style is never inaccessible is an added plus.
Central to Wilson's philosophy is the idea of training the mind to see beyond the "triviality of everydayness," to grasp higher states of consciousness and express boldness, originality, fearlessness and aesthetic which centered on efforts to become more "godlike".
Wilson himself is an admirer of the charlatan Gurdjieff/ Ouspensky and has written a good introduction to Gurdjieff's work entitled "The war against sleep".

 Colin Wilson Discussion
As young man, Wilson was lionized by the British press in the 1950s when The Outsider was published but he rather rapidly fell into disrepute shortly after and is considered now to be a bogus talent.
Wilson tended to stress the positive side of human consciousness as a counterweight to the morbid existentialism of writers like Beckett, Sartre etc, and I think he is to be commended for that.
You always feels more enthusiasm for life when you read anything by Wilson as he endeavours to show that the popular trend for pessimism is really a failure to look at all the facts.

In it, Wilson shares his expert research and investigation into seventy-five of the world's most enduring mysteries, among them crop circles and crystal skulls, monsters and meteors, pyramids and poltergeists, the Hope Diamond and the Holy Shroud of Turin.
The authors', Colin Wilson and Damon Wilson, pet theories become abundantly clear as certain themes and concepts are repeated throughout the book, such as their ideas concerning poltergeists which are shoe-horned into far too many of the entries outside of the one for poltergeists.
If you`re a fan of Colin Wilson you`ll find this to be another excellent contribution of his to the "paranormal" field of research (or to be somewhat more precise: to the not so normal field of research).
