Coliseum at Richfield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Coliseum at Richfield was an arena formerly located in Richfield Township, Summit County, Ohio.
The coliseum was built in Richfield to draw fans from Cleveland and Akron, as nearly 5 million Ohioans lived within less than an hour's drive (in good weather) from the Coliseum.
A projected population boom in Northeast Ohio fell short of expectations, and the arena's remote location turned out to be one of it's biggest flaws.

Built in 1973 at a cost of $36 million, the palatial Coliseum in Richfield, OH stood in the center of Northeastern Ohio’s population.
The Coliseum opened to a Frank Sinatra concert on October 26, 1974, and throughout it’s existence was a highly regarded concert venue and a sought-after stop for major concert tours ranging from the Led Zeppelin to Whitney Houston.
The NBA was the Coliseum’s only major draw throughout the 80’s, although concerts, the circus, and a successful indoor soccer team called the Cleveland Force also brought revenue to the building.

For 25 years, the hulking shape of the Richfield Coliseum hunkered incongruously above the cornfields of northeast Ohio, visible for miles above the plunging ravines, hidden streams, and dense, leaf-carpeted forests of the Cuyahoga River Valley.
The new sporting arenas also signaled the death knell for the Richfield Coliseum, and while many northeast Ohio residents hailed the infusion of wealth back into downtown, they worried that one symbol of sprawl might be replaced with another.
The dedication of one sprawl-threatened property to parkland does not spell the end of sprawl development trends in northeast Ohio, but it is a powerful symbol in a region that is beginning to value its disappearing farms and forests.

Eventually, Copps Coliseum was chosen and approved by the board of directors of the arena.
To help with acoustics, which are usually hampered by the large size of arenas, the coliseum's roof was corrugated and the blockwork on the uppers walls was slotted.
The next addition was the Copps Coliseum Wall of Fame, a series of pictures and short histories of athletes, teams and events in Hamilton sporting history that would cover some of the inside walls of the arena (opened in August, 1987).
