Shoulder Solutions — A Broken collarbone is also known as a broken clavicle.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The collarbone, called the clavicle by doctors, is an "S" shaped bone that connects the shoulder to the breastplate (called the sternum).
Also, because the clavicle is very close to the skin, the swelling and the bruising that is a natural part of every broken clavicle can easily be seen.
Plates and screws are often used to return the ends of the broken clavicle bones to their normal alignment and hold them there while they heal.

Shoulder1.com - Broken Clavicle (Broken Collarbone)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The clavicle (collarbone) is a slightly curved bone that connects the breastbone (sternum) to the shoulder blade (scapula).
Otherwise known as the collarbone, the clavicle lies in a precarious spot, and a stiff sideward blow to the shoulder or one straight to the collarbone itself will often result in a break in the bone.
Since the collarbone normally heals on its own, an orthopedic surgeon will generally order the patient to immobilize his or her arm with a sling for two to three weeks.
