A species-specific character used in identification (especially field) of collared flycatcher females is the white bases for outer webs of primaries forming a ‘wing-spot’.
The bird was identified to be a collared flycatcher on the basis of other plumage characters (would be difficult in a field situation for persons unfamiliar with the species).
This identification was later verified from banding records showing that this individual was a daughter of collared flycatcher parents (i.e.

Mixed song is not caused by introgression from the collared flycatcher but is due to heterospecific copying.
Mixed song provokes aggressive behaviour in collared flycatcher males and leads to heterospecific pairing and maladaptive hybridization.
This was due to a reduction in the frequency of mixed song in the pied flycatcher and a divergence in the song of the collared flycatcher.

This paper address the question whether the mass constancy during incubation and following mass loss after hatching is actually related to breeding stage.
The results show that body mass in Collared Flycatcher females is associated with the reproductive stage, and may reflect an adaptive strategy.
It is suggested that high and stable incubation mass can be a fasting endurance in case of adverse weather conditions when females are expected to stay in the nest instead of foraging.
