  Collared Scops Owl
The Collared Scops Owl, Otus lettia, is an owl which is a resident breeder in south Asia from northern Pakistan, northern India and the Himalayas east to south China.
The Collared Scops Owl is a small (23-25cm) owl, although it is the largest of the scops owls.
The upperparts are grey or brown, depending on the subspecies, with faint buff spotting.

There is a species called Scops Owl, ''Otus scops'', in Europe, where it is the only scops owl, but it is named as Eurasian Scops Owl in the world listings to avoid confusion with the many tropical species of scops owl.
This is a small owl, and at 19-21 cm length and a 47-54 cm wingspan is not as large as the Little Owl.
It is very similar to the slightly smaller Indian Scops Owl, ''O. bakkamoena'' of which it is sometimes considered a race.

Resembles Scops Owl but is slightly larger; has a grayish collar on the nape: orange eyes: feathered toes.
The collared scops owl, which has only very minor morphal differences in shades of brown rather than grey and rufous phases, ranges from Pakistan and India across to southern China and Japan and down to Malaysia and the Philippines.
In the forests of Malaysia the collared scops owl is replaced by the forest-dwelling reddish scops owl and, further up in the mountains, by the spotted scops owl; but through the felling and opening of the primary forest, the collared scops owl is spreading inland at the expense of the others.

Indian Scops Owls measure about 8 inches (20 cms) in length and inhabit lightly wooded regions and dry upland areas as well as orchards, parks and gardens.
Indian Scops Owls thrive well in quite modest accommodation, I house several pairs within a block of five aviaries, with each one measuring 6ft x 6ft and 9ft deep (2m x 2m x 3m).

I saw the owl right away; it was perched in a conspicuous spot on a bare twig at the top of a tree, clearly illuminated by the yellow street lamp.
Then the owl flew away; maybe it realized that the owl "inside" was a fake, or maybe it was frightened by the man's voice "Collared Scops Owl" at the beginning of the track as it repeated.

It started to rain as we set off across the golf course and by the time it finished four hours later I was a little damp.
A visit to a sewage settling pond (which by now will have been filled in by the development work going on) produced Cinnamon bittern and White-browed crake (found by Brian and giving stonking views).
Red collared doves were feeding with the local pigeons, watched by Scaly-breasted munias in nearby tall grass.

Moving on from there via a couple of cute Collared Scops Owl stake-outs and a pair of resting Oriental Honey-buzzards, we had birds galore.
Our final stop of the day was within a kilometre of the hotel where a pair of Tawny Fish Owls, a Small Niltava and our first Puff-throated and Rusty-cheeked Scimitar Babblers all put on memorable performances.
We couldn't find the hoped for Koklass Pheasant nor, thanks to a host of fire-crackers, the Hill Partridge but we were treated to looks a fine flock of Black-faced Warblers.

This small 'island' of pristine forests among quite populated area attracts many forest birds (150 breeding species), including very rare and declining for the entire Ussuriland, as Chinese Sparrow Hawk (Accipiter soloensis), Collared Scops Owl (Otus bakkamoena) and Brown Hawl Owl (Ninox scutulata).
Being lucky, one can see the owls (5 species) and Chinese Sparrow Hawk (Accipiter soloensis).
At last, in the bush, one can find breeding settlements of Vinous-throated Parrotbill (Suthora webbiana).

We arrived at KKNP in the dark and settled into our bungalow near the HQ, Large-tailed Nightjars were very common and obvious and a Collared Scops-Owl flew out a tree nearby.
We were advised not to let the huge (30cm) Tockay Gecko that lurked above the door into the bungalow as they are supposed to have a vicious bite.......it certainly held my respect.
Other great sightings in this area were Pin-tailed Parrotfinch in their favourite habitat of Bamboo, Plain-pouched Hornbill, Rufous-browed Flycatcher, Great Barbet and for Kim Seng a long-awaited Collared Owlet clutching a similar-sized babbler in it's talons.
