Collateral (finance) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Collateral within a financial context is used to indicate assets that secure a debt obligation.
For example, in the case of a mortgage, the house serves as the collateral for the mortgage loan.
Collateral, especially within banking, may traditionally refer to secured lending (also known as asset-based lending) as well as more recently as collateralisation arrangements to secure trade transactions (also known as capital market collateralization).

Collateral damage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Collateral damage is a U.S. Military term for unintended or incidental damage during a military operation.
Etymologically, the expression "collateral damage" probably was originally used as military doublespeak rather than a euphemism, as the adjective "collateral" doesn't seem to have been used as a synonym for "unintentional" or "accidental" earlier.
The term "collateral damage" came into the public consciousness during the Persian Gulf War of 1991 from televised military briefings, and was used to describe civilian victims of the bombing of Iraq.

Collateral ancestor is a legal term referring to a person not in the direct line of ascent, but is of an ancestral family.
This is generally taken to mean a brother or sister of an ancestor (hence a "collateral ancestor" is never an ancestor of the subject).
Collateral descendant is used to refer to a descendant of the brother or sister of an ancestor.

 DVD Verdict Review - Collateral
Collateral isn't a loud film—much of it consists of dialogue and ambient sound—but the audio is presented beautifully in DTS 5.1 (English only), Dolby Digital 5.1 (in English and French), and Dolby 2.0 (English only) tracks.
About the only element of Collateral that struck me as a significant flaw was the largely unnecessary subplot involving a Los Angeles police detective, played by Mark Ruffalo (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), who's the only cop on the case to realize that the cab driver isn't the guy doing the killing.
Collateral is a tense, thrilling action flick that doubles as an insightful and profound character study.

 Collateral (2004): Reviews
Mann's moody Collateral unravels toward the end, faltering at its conclusion but dispensing enough atmosphere, characterization, and world-weary humanism along the way that audiences would be wise to enjoy the ride without worrying too much about the final destination.
Collateral is still a hell of a ride, but could've used a smoother landing.
Collateral is a slim drink of thin beer, remarkable only as evidence that Mann might have a modern masterpiece in him if he were cut loose and allowed to roam around in his own obsessions.

Collateral Movie Review at Hollywood Video
If Michael Mann's latest foray into the underbelly of Los Angles, Collateral, were to be judged on style points alone, it would be one of the top 10 movies of the year.
With Collateral, his visually sleek and atmospheric journey into Los Angeles noir, director Michael Mann is back on familiar ground after going the biopic route with Ali.
Mann is such a top-notch filmmaker—a master at conveying mood—that Collateral draws you in, but despite a handful of effective scenes, the narrative sadly lacks much in the way of surprise or emotional intrigue.

DVD review of Collateral - DVD Town   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
While “Collateral” strives to be more, and succeeds through the majority of its run-time, it falls into many of the same clichés that strike its contemporaries.
“Collateral” is the story of two men who are drawn together by chance and luck who become more inseparable as the film rolls on.
A lot of natural lighting is used and there is a large amount of grain that’s distracting in well-lit and daylight scenes, however it was all present in the theatrical presentation of the movie.

Before Sunrise, or Los Angeles Plays Itself In a Lonely Place
Collateral is a work of art in the classical Hollywood sense of an Alfred Hitchcock, a John Ford or, more recently, a Clint Eastwood film: a well-worn genre is manipulated (and at times expanded or reinvented) in the image of its creator's personal preoccupations.
Collateral, in the final analysis, is a film about the beauty of the postmodern urban landscape as exemplified by Los Angeles' anonymous incarnation, which concurrently figures the moral universe of its characters.
In this way, Collateral achieves a degree of organic, internal rigour worthy of the title masterpiece – or at least minor masterpiece – which it shares with one other American film released earlier this year: the only difference is that where one concludes at sunset, the other finishes before sunrise.

Collateral, directed by three-time Academy Award nominee Michael Mann and starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, is a dark thriller with a psychological edge and an intense, tightly focused soundtrack.

 "Collateral" - Salon
The scene is a dream to watch and to listen to, for the writing and for what Mann and the actors do with it, and for the way its visuals, as in an Edward Hopper painting, capture seemingly contradictory vibes of coziness and isolation.
The opening of "Collateral" is everything you want out of the movies in one compact setup: You wonder what else Mann has in store and if anything could possibly top what he's already given us.
Mann's visual sense never flags: Most of "Collateral" (its cinematographers are Paul Cameron and Dion Beebe) was shot digitally, using different types of specially modified high-definition cameras, and the picture's surface has an unusual texture: It's somehow crisp and velvety at once.

 Knee injuries - collateral ligaments
In the knee, there are several structures: the collateral ligaments, the meniscus, cruciate ligaments and articular (joint) cartilages.
This is because a collateral ligament is not a single, thin ligament, but consists of many minor ligaments in different directions and layers, which mesh together into one single strong ligament.
When a collateral ligament is damaged, the extent of the damage may vary from just a small crack in one of the small ligaments to a total rupture of the exterior or interior collateral ligament.
