Flipside Movie Emporium: Collateral Movie Review
Collateral draws comparisons to Mann's earlier Heat both in its polished adoration of the City of Angels, and in its central interplay between two men locked in unspoken conflict.
Indeed, so engaged is Collateral in its material that at times it becomes a little too glossy.
Thankfully, films like Collateral don't need perfection; they need only the confidence to flash that irresistible grin and hold out their hand for us to join them.

Collateral finds Mann in "Heat" territory again, which is fine, because this master filmmaker really excels in the crime/thriller genre (in addition to Heat, check out the stellar Manhunter, or The Insider).

Collateral (though damaged by a pat ending) is slick, blazing entertainment, and easily one of the hippest thrillers of the year.

And so on and so on, until the movie comes to the most absurd coincidence of all involving a cell phone that can only get a signal from the top of a parking structure that just happens to have the perfect view of the action unfolding across the way in a high rise.
Of course, the movie would only be about half an hour long if Vincent acted completely consistently, since one of his first acts would have been to kill Max to eliminate a witness—he certainly wouldn't risk getting pulled over in a cab with a smashed windshield.
With Collateral, his visually sleek and atmospheric journey into Los Angeles noir, director Michael Mann is back on familiar ground after going the biopic route with Ali.

'Collateral' is a thriller that draws closer and closer to a tense, edgy, dramatic climax.
Towards the latter stages of the movie, Max has become almost a nemesis to Vincent; something that Vincent is totally unprepared for, which means the relationship dynamics keep changing - something that audiences would surely appreciate.

Collateral director Michael Mann has delivered another slick, edgy, if a little talky, action drama about a hit man who inadvertently involves a hapless cab driver in his one-night killing spree.
But Foxx never lets you forget Max is the heart and soul of the film, effectively bringing the character out of the shadows and into true blue heroism.
Even if the characters want to talk more than they should, Collateral is still an ultimate thrill ride through the mean streets of L.A., powered by a killer performance (pun intended) from Tom Cruise.

Collateral is a work of splendid gritty reality, an exercise in both restraint and wildness.
What drives Collateral is not its relentless escalation of events (though certainly that does occur), but its emphatic insistence that we become invested in and begin to love both Max and Vincent.
The film was shot with a HD digital camera, expressing a gritty palette that is at once wholly engrossing and yet at the same time, places a distance between the audience and the film, completing the thematic purpose of the film itself.

If Michael Mann 's latest foray into the underbelly of Los Angles, Collateral, were to be judged on style points alone, it would be one of the top 10 movies of the year.
Although it pulses with an edgy, neon menace reminiscent of Mann's cult favorite Thief, this dusk-to-dawn tour of LA's underside comes off as too contrived and psychologically shallow, despite its strained attempts to invest the cat-and-mouse relationship of Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx with a smattering of depth.
Mann is such a top-notch filmmaker—a master at conveying mood—that Collateral draws you in, but despite a handful of effective scenes, the narrative sadly lacks much in the way of surprise or emotional intrigue.

SPLICEDwire | "Collateral" movie review (2004) "Collateral" review, Michael Mann, Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx
"Collateral" is about conversations and head games, about what people say and do not say with their language, their looks and their demeanor.
Half the movie takes place in Foxx's cab, where the two men are constantly sizing each other up -- and while neither actor gives a standout performance, they both have an inherent ability to tinge their characters with unexpected depth, which make this the better half.
But if all this reveals "Collateral" to have just an average Hollywood action-suspense movie at its core, it is a masterfully made average action-suspense movie.

He creates a thoroughly believable character who is forced to do unbelievable things to survive and his progression from mild-mannered daydreamer to man of action, with Vincent as catalyst, seems perfectly logical and necessary in the context of the film.
Overall, "Collateral" is quintessentially a Michael Mann movie and, while some might find that his visual style and deep-thinking characters veer toward pretentiousness, they do imbue his films with a self-belief that, in the case of "Collateral," stops it from becoming a high concept movie in the worst sense of the phrase.

There are video cameras that capture his presence, but we are led to believe no one has any idea who he is. Despite the fact that we are also led to believe that he's killed hundreds, if not thousands of people in his eight years as an assassin.
Also, he proves here that he's capable of directing intense action — the climax of the movie is stupid and clichéd and runs itself into a wall (it's way too ambiguous for its own good as a thriller) but Mann handles it like an epic and all in all the audience walks away from "Collateral"
I liked this movie a lot, I purchased the DVD and I think multiple viewings will only improve it, but it is by no means Mann's best film and in comparison to "Heat" it seems quite poor.

 MovieFreak.com - "Collateral" Movie Review
What’s special about Michael Mann’s new crime thriller “Collateral” isn’t that it treads new ground or goes in new directions but that it is so naturally rhythmic to the cadences of multifaceted humanity.
No, this is a movie about the here and now, about the actions required when extreme circumstances knock, and this compression of time and space gives “Collateral” an epic, almost nausea-inducing, urgency most contemporary thrillers lack.
But it is Foxx that steals the thunder, and like the wolves prowling the early morning desert streets of the starry-eyed metropolis at its center, “Collateral” is a wily creature made all the better by the carnivore slowly springing to life at its center.
