Collecting duct carcinomas (synonym: carcinoma of the ducts of Bellini) are usually large tumors located in the medulla or central parts of the kidney with extension into the perinephric fat and invasion of the renal pelvis.
Light microscopically, the basic cell type of collecting duct carcinoma is medium sized tumor cells with a basophilic, sometimes light cytoplasm due to a pronounced formation of endoplasmic reticulum and varying degrees of glycogen deposits often forming typical hobnail cells.
Electron microscopically, the lateral and basal cell membranes are orientated linearly without interdigitations and invaginations resembling those of the principal cells of the medullary collecting duct.

Collecting duct carcinoma (CDC) is a rare but very aggressive variant of kidney carcinoma that arises from the epithelium of Bellini's ducts, in the distal portion of the nephron.
Recent evidence suggests that solid renal parenchymal tumors arising in the distal portion of the nephron, such as oncocytomas, chromophobe renal cell carcinomas and collecting duct carcinomas represent an heterogeneous group of neoplasm from both clinical and biological perspectives [2].
Collecting duct carcinoma (CDC), also known as Bellini duct carcinoma, is a rare but highly aggressive renal neoplasm arising from the distal portion of the nephron, and represents approximately 2% of all the RCCs [3,4].

But the roles of membrane transporters and channels that are involved in the vectorial transport of solutes and water along the nephron and collecting duct, and the receptors and the associated regulatory proteins and intracellular signaling pathways that control their functions are yet to be deciphered.
Often these transporters and receptors are expressed in nephron or collecting duct segments that are not directly affected by the insults (ischemia or drugs) that lead to the ARF.
However, the factors responsible for the decreased expression of the collecting duct aquaporins and the lack of their responsiveness to ADH are yet to be deciphered.

 Schafer Research Details
Fourth, we have employed cell culture techniques with the A6 cell line and primary cultures of rabbit cortical collecting duct cells in an attempt to determine the regulatory mechanism which appears to prevent an effect of vasopressin on Na+ transport in the native rabbit cortical collecting duct.
In particular, we have found that after growth in primary culture cortical collecting duct cells that are immuno-dissected from the rabbit renal cortex are no longer refractory to the stimulatory effects of vasopressin, but exhibit a sustained increase in Na+ transport when the hormone is added.
We are presently conducting studies with isolated perfused cortical collecting ducts from Dahl salt-sensitive rats to determine whether the same or different hormonal regulatory mechanisms are present as in the salt-resistant rat, and in the normal Sprague-Dawley rats that we have been using in other studies.

In the absence of antidiuretic hormone (ADH or vasopressin), the collecting duct is an impermeable tubule which conveys hypotonic fluid from the distal convoluted tubule to the renal pelvis.
ADH causes the CD to become permeable to water, allowing concentration of the urine as the fluid passes through the hypertonic renal medulla.
In the absence of ADH, the collecting duct is impermeable to water and the hypotonic fluid from the distal tubule passes out unaltered as urine.

Water is drawn out of the ducts by the high levels of solutes in the interstitial fluid of the inner medulla region.
It can't go out of the tubule after that (not out the ascending loop, not out the DCT, not even out of the part of the collecting duct that is up in the cortical region) the walls are impermeable to urea.
This high concentration of urea in the duct causes some urea to diffuse out of the lower end of the collecting duct, deep in the renal medulla, where some of it will diffuse into descending loop of Henle.
