eMedicine - Duplicated Collecting System : Article Excerpt by: Ali Nawaz Khan, MBBS, LRCP, FRCS, FRCP, FRCR
Duplicated collecting systems can be unilateral or bilateral and occur in 15% of the population.
The ureteral bud associated with the future lower pole separates first from the Wolffian duct and the orifice progresses superiorly and laterally as a result of growth of the urogenital sinus.
Mortality/Morbidity: Most cases of duplicated collecting system are detected incidentally; however, the incidence of ureteropelvic obstruction is increased with duplex kidney, hydronephrosis, and pyelonephritis in patients with complete ureteral duplication.

As the urine travels down the collecting duct system, it passes by the medullary interstitium which has a high sodium concentration as a result of the loop of Henle's countercurrent multiplier system.
Though the collecting duct is normally impermeable to water, it becomes permeable in the presence of antidiuretic hormone (ADH).
Lower portions of the collecting duct are also permeable to urea, allowing some of it to enter the medulla of the kidney, thus maintaining its high ion concentration (which is very important for the nephron).

Kidney - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Part of the urinary system, the kidneys filter wastes (especially urea) from the blood and excrete them, along with water, as urine.
The renal pyramids, which are actually openings of the collecting ducts, can be observed in the human renal medulla.
97.9% of the water in the filtrate enters the convoluted tubules and collecting ducts by osmosis.

The high osmolality is a consequence of the differential permeability of the limbs of the loops of Henle and the collecting ducts to water and ions.
In the absence of ADH the collecting duct is thought to be impermeable and relatively little water is reabsorbed from it.

The inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD) is subdivided into two regions: the initial IMCD, located in the outer third of the inner medulla, and the terminal IMCD, situated in the distal two thirds of the inner medulla (see Fig.
In all segments of the collecting duct, the osmotic water permeability is controlled largely by vasopressin.
The cortical and outer medullary segments of the collecting duct are largely impermeable to urea in the presence and absence of vasopressin.

Should You Get Your Heating Ducts Cleaned? | CMHC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A hot air furnace heats and distributes air through its ducting system. The ducts are usually made of sheet metal and are most obvious in your basement, where they hang from the floor joists. The return, or cold air, ducts bring air to the furnace, usually collecting it centrally in the house.
Duct cleaning may be justifiable to you personally for that very reason: you may not want to have your house air circulated through a duct passage that is not as clean as the rest of the house.
CMHC research showed that return air ducts, which are relatively big and have slow moving air, are generally far dirtier than the supply ducts. You should be able to accomplish much of the return air duct cleaning with a household vacuum cleaner after removing the register grill.

Ventilation hygiene inspection, air duct cleaning equipment
Regardless of the filters in the ventilation system, some particulate contaminants from the outdoor air will enter the system and accumulate on the inner surfaces of the ventilation equipment or flow with the incoming air into the ventilated spaces themselves.
The dirt that collects in ventilation equipment and on duct walls and in various heat recovery, refrigerating, humidifying and air distribution equipment may act in humid conditions as a fertile soil for microbes.
Incoming air ducts should be cleaned at 5-year intervals when the dust concentration is greater than 2.0 g/m2 in class 1, and greater than 5.0 g/m2 in class 2.

Protein free fluid from glomerulus enters Bowman's space and is drained by the proximal tubule which leads to the descending limb of loop of Henle, from where the fluid goes to the ascending limb and then to the distal convoluted tubule.
The fluid then flows into the collecting duct system, comprised of the connecting tubule, followed by the cortical collecting duct and the medullary collecting duct.
