  English collective nouns - Wikivisual
Most collective nouns encountered in everyday speech (such as "group") are mundane and are not specific to one kind of constituent object (for example, the uses "group of people", "group of dogs", and "group of ideas" are all correct uses).
The tradition of using collective nouns that are specific to certain kinds of animals stems from an English hunting tradition, dating back to at least the 15th century, in which poetic names were given to specific kinds of prey ("venery" means the hunting of animals).
For this reason, there are many collective nouns that refer to animals and many of these original collective nouns are archaic: a "harras of horses" seems to have been used little since the 1400s.

Many of these original collective nouns are archaic: a "harass of horses" doesn't seem to have been used much since the 1400s.
Some alternatives for collective nouns can be clearly traced to the evolution of pronunciation in different areas (hence a "parcel of hogs" and a "passel of hogs").
The all-time champion collective noun is "set", for it can legitimately be used as a collective noun for a vast number of concepts (a set of ideals, plans, ambitions, principles, objectives, mathematical objects, etc) or inanimate (typically manufactured) objects (knives, spoons, keys, dinnerware, manuals, etc).

It is from collective nouns of the first sort that Set Theory draws the idea of collections of objects, but the distinctive thing about those natural language terms is that they are species specific, to one degree or another, so that they each describe certain mereological sums under a certain aspect.
One must take care about what is added to the bare ‘y is one of some apples’: clearly ‘y is one of 2 apples’ may speak about the same apples, but is more specific about their number, and ‘y is one of a pair of apples’ likewise.

There is no structure for one-radical derived nouns in all the plural forms, since the plural suffixes for those nouns are inflected as well; so there simply are no one-radical derived nouns in dual, septal, indefinite and definite plural.
Nouns in singular, dual and septal are normally indefinite; there is, however, a definite prefix thu- (or th’- before vowels), although this is only rarely used, since definite nouns are mostly obvious from the context.
For action nouns, the durative present is used to form a gerund which may act both in an adjectival and in a nominal sense; that is, u1a for one-radical roots, u1a2 for two-radical roots and 1u23(u) for three-radical roots; this is also employed as a verb abstract structure, whence

There is a considerable similarity between "collective noun" and "concept", but "collective noun" is fairly arbitrary in the language, while "concept" is not.
A concrete example of a collective noun, in American usage, is "team".
In the first sentence, the subject is the collective noun "team" -- formally singular (note the use of "is", not "are") but conceptually plural ("they have", not "it has", though you could say that, which gets us into another level of complication).

Proto-Indo-European Syntax. Chapter 5: Syntactic Categories of PIE
Already in the early dialects the subject or object relationship of duals and of neuter nouns to verbs in the third person was determinable chiefly from their position and clarified by the presence of other elements in the clause which were unambiguous.
The late development of the number system in the noun is also clear from the lack of parallelism between the forms of the dual, for which only three forms developed, and the forms of the singular and plural.
The number system, both in the noun and in the verb, came to be reduced to two categories, with eventual loss of uses and inflections corresponding to dual number, such as a distinct adjectival comparative as opposed to a positive and a superlative.
