Colleen Doran became famous around my parts for "A Distant Soil", the story about these two siblings, who have special powers, and, as it later on shows, they are Avatar-priests of their planet by birth.
Colleen Doran's artwork for the novels is gorgeous, detailed, girly and have a bit of Raphaelian fleshiness, which prevents it from becoming bubbles of show-off skills.
Colleen Doran intrigues me not only for her very skilled art, but also for her versality, for example: pick up "A Distant Soil" (for example HERE, online and legal and free of charge) and after that "Orbiter" and you know, what I mean.

Colleen Doran's artwork is beautiful; incredibly intricate and detailed, equally adept at depictions of a shantytown as at capturing the high technology of a space shuttle.
Doran is also one of the finest artists in the business at capturing degrees of emotion.
For the most part, Doran excels, as in the ever-subtle and changing but always realistic body language, the excellent use of variety to make talking scenes constantly interesting, and the detail on and inside the shuttle, all showing that this has been an incredible labour of love.

Doran's art is one that's always seemed to not so much sit on the page as flow across it.
Doran's page layouts are sharp, normally sticking to a normal structure, but then breaking from it for moments above and beyond the normal realm; Rieken and D'Mer's first appearance, for instance, is heralded by the normal panel layout almost shattering as they suddenly spill across the page in all their glory.

Colleen Doran's A Distant Soil is nothing if not ambitious; Doran has been working on the story for over a decade, mixing science fiction, Arthurian legend, traditional fantasy and other elements into a far-reaching epic.
Having already praised the premise, the writing, and the artwork, I should take a moment to commend Doran on her cast of characters, which draws from a diverse range of ethnicities, social strata, and sexual orientations in a realistic manner.
It really only makes sense - Doran has worked hard to make this fantastic world as believable and detailed as possible, and the diversity of the cast is but one of the ways she accomplishes this.

Colleen Doran's art is lovely but lacks some of the technical expertise of an artist who has grown up under the tutelage of a strong visual editor.
Doran's art, having been honed in a fantasy milieu, felt somewhat out of place here, but Ellis seems to take enormous pains to work with a variety of talented and capable artists and I suspect that he got results close to what he envisioned.
On the positive side, some of the dialogue scenes between the characters are illustrated in an unorthodox and fresh fashion that a more traditional artist wouldn't have attempted and that lend a note of intimacy to some of the exchanges.
