College Fjord, which branches off of Prince William Sound, plunges into the heart of the Chugach Mountains.
Glaciers on the northwest side of College Fjord are generally named after 19th century "women's colleges." Vassar Glacier is located north of Wellesley Glacier and south of Bryn Mawr Glacier.
Dominating the terminus of College Fjord is Harvard Glacier, a tidewater glacier noted for its very active calving.

We had the privilege of entering the short fjord on a gloriously clear day, and were able to see all of its major glaciers with one sweep of the eyes.

As we cruised up College Fjord we gazed at 16 of the glaciers, some vast, some smaller, all of which poured down the rocky mountains, surrounded by the debris and scree that was picked up or ground away centuries before.
College Fjord was christened by the American railway magnate Edward H. Harriman in 1899 and the glaciers were given names of the various universities and colleges that his accompanying scientists attended, including the spectacular Harvard Fjord at its head.

The exploration of Harriman and College Fjords was, according to Burroughs and Muir, the high point to the original Harriman Expedition.
They named the main glaciers in College Fjord after the Seven Sisters women's colleges, a number of men's colleges, and a couple of Harvard presidents and finishing schools.
