It was chartered in 1947 as the National Football Shrine and Hall of Fame and reorganized in 1954 under its present name; in 1999 it had 109 chapters.
To be eligible, a football player must have graduated from college at least ten years before his nomination, received major first team All-America recognition, and retired from professional football.
Candidates are inducted into the Hall of Fame at an annual awards dinner, held in New York City.
