In Rowing, the athlete sits in the boat facing backwards (towards the stern), and uses the oars which are attached to the boat at the oarlocks to propel the boat forward.
In most competitive forms of rowing, the boat (called a shell or fine boat) is narrow to avoid drag and the oars are attached to oarlocks at the end of outriggers extending from the sides of the boat.
Rowing boats (or similar vessels) have been around for thousands of years, but prior to the 18th century, there is little mention of boat races.

Ithaca College won the Division III team championship on Saturday at the 2005 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. In addition, finals in the Division I and II races also were set during Saturday’s racing.
In the Division III team championship, Ithaca College and Smith College tied with 10 points each after racing concluded, but Ithaca won the national title by virtue of winning the tiebreaker, which is determined by the crew that finishes highest in the varsity eight final.

Fueled by the overwhelming popularity of rowing in England and the rapid rise of boat clubs at New England colleges and universities, the Minnehaha Boat Club (a rowing club) was formed at Trinity in 1856.
This was the first Trinity College team to be organized in any sport and the first rowing club in the Hartford area.
Several members of the Trinity College Boat Club were active in organizing competitions and in 1875, Trinity sent two boat club members to Springfield, Massachusetts to help organize the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletics of America, the first overall intercollegiate athletic association established in the United States.
