Collingwood was struck by the poverty of Takao, and took particular notice of the differences in ethnicity and customs between the Chinese and aborigines.
Collingwood then sailed to Kelung (Keelung), where he became acquainted with local coal mining operations (though he received a "less than cordial" greeting from the coal merchants); he commented on the primitive manual labor at the mines and performed a technical evaluation of the quality of the coal.
Collingwood also proved very prolific, writing some forty papers on natural history in scientific periodicals, as well as publishing many expositions on his religious beliefs (in both verse and prose) during the course of his lifetime.(11)

We both went up to Collingwood in October 1977 having been interviewed by the first master PC Bayley, finishing in 1980, so this was our second year.

 Earthbeat - 22/12/01: The Kitchen Garden at Collingwood School
The Edible School Yard is a world leading garden project at the King School in Berkley, California and it's the inspiration for the kitchen garden launched at Collingwood College in Melbourne in July.
Basil Natoli: Alexandra, the garden project at Collingwood College is literally on the doorsteps of the Collingwood Public Housing estate, where there are a number of community gardens which are already being tended by families from the public housing estate, and those gardens’ beds reflect the cultural diversity of the families involved.
Many of those children attend the school, which is literally 100 metres away from the estate, and we want to make the garden a fun and an exciting and a very colourful place for the children.

The Collingwoods were probably the most intellectually and artistically gifted family in the Lake District in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The first member of the family to become involved in the Lakes was William Collingwood (1819-1903), a well-known water-colour artist.

 Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation - The Model at Collingwood College
There are two unique factors about the Kitchen Garden at Collingwood College.  The first is the intrinsic link between the garden, the kitchen and the table.
In both the kitchen and the garden the children work in small groups with the support of a volunteer under the supervision of the specialist and the classroom teacher (class sizes at Collingwood College range from 20 to 25 students; there are usually 4- 5 volunteers per class).
Attracting volunteers from the community is critical to the programs success.  Volunteers collectively contribute more than 2000 hours a year of work in both the garden and the kitchen.

 The School Kitchen Garden Project
In May 2001 I was introduced to the then principal of Melbourne's Collingwood College, Frances Laurino, who enthusiastically endorsed the decision to create a Kitchen Garden to benefit the students from grades 3-6 at the school.
The kitchen manager and the gardener are assisted in each class by the classroom teacher and by some of the wonderful volunteers who have become interested in the project.
The Kitchen Garden at Collingwood College is now four years old and has attracted considerable interest from other schools, and interested parents and community groups.

The University Botanic Garden surrounds the college from the top all the way round to the bottom on the right hand side, leaving Grey College and the science site to the left, and South Road to the bottom of the picture.
