of the Colne Valley Railway as it is today began one evening in the summer of 1973 when two railway enthusiasts walked a one mile section of the former Colne Valley and Halstead Railway at Castle Hedingham.
The section of line chosen, between mileposts 60 and 61 was idyllic, for it meanders along the course of the river Colne, passes through cuttings and along embankments, in the beautiful and romantic English countryside.
The Colne Valley Railway is in North Essex close to the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire borders.

Across from Earls Colne, on the North Bank of the River Colne, lies the much smaller parish of Colne Engaine (population 900+), named after the river and the family which which was principal landlord from 1279 to 1367 - the Engaines.
Colne Engaine is well endowed with public open spaces -the Village Green, Booses Green, a football field and a large Recreation Ground.

Colne Valley Railway, in Essex south-west of Sudbury.
After a brief spell at the East Anglian Railway Museum, it became the first locomotive to arrive at the Colne Valley Railway, in September 1973.
On the return to the station, we pulled right in behind the steam train for the volunteer staff to have a lunchtime break.

The Railway receives more than 40,000 visitors per year, and an army of 120 volunteers help to run the site, but its future was uncertain when the current owner announced their intention to retire.
The original Colne Valley and Halstead Railway was built in the 1850’s and funded by public subscription led by local industries.
Jeremy Dunn from the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway Trust adds; ‘The announcement of this award is the culmination of 18 months of hard work to secure the Colne Valley Railway for future generations.

 Locomotives on minor railways
The railway was opened in 1891 to serve part of the Yorkshire coalfield, south of Leeds/north of Wakefield between Lofthouse and Stourton, serving Robin Hood.
Operation of the railway was far from orthodox and the line was in receivership from 1878 to 1908.
The railway was absorbed by the LMS, but passenger serives were withdrawn on 30 March 1930, the section between Pilling and Knott End closed on 13 November 1950, and the line was closed completely on 31 July 1963.

It was renamed Colne 1.5.1889 and renamed Earls Colne 1.5.1905.
An Act of Parliament of 30th June 1856 authorised the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway to build a line from the Eastern Counties Railway at Chappel and Wakes Colne to Halstead.
In 1973 two railway enthusiasts put forward a proposal to rebuild a short section of the railway to operate a steam service as a tourist attraction.

Today's Colne Valley Railway is a preserved steam railway operated by volunteer members of the Colne Valley Railway Preservation Society.
It is approximately 1 mile in length and operates over a section of the old Colne Valley and Halstead Railway route which ran between Chappel and Wakes Colne in Essex and Haverhill in Suffolk and which formed part of a longer route between Colchester and Cambridge.
The railway is open to visitors from March to December where they can see what has been achieved so far and take a ride behind one of the historic steam or diesel locomotives on days when trains are operating.

The other AC car at the CVR is W 79976, but this is a the beginnining of its restoration, in a very much stripped down condition.
Although there used to be a railway here, the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway, the present preserved line was founded on what was virtually a green field site.
Begun in 1973, building and land reclamation work is still continuing today, but the work already done (including demolishing and re-building a genuine CV and HR station building to its original spec.) is amazing.

The railway ran its first trains in 1875 when the line was used to take goods up the valley and to bring the ore down from the mines for transhipment to the Furness Railway at Ravenglass.
Nowadays the railway is geared towards the leisure passenger rather than industry although apart from a short period in the Christmas and January periods it does run daily trains, including two for school children Monday to Friday.

The train was at the Colne Valley Railway as part of a new educational programme called Big Images for Little People and literally hundreds of children have been to see the real "Old Smokey" in action and more family days will be held on selected Sundays at the railway during August 2004.
Fred, the driver of the train was sadly forced to retire and was very upset to be parted from his old pal, 'Smokey'.

As a way of commemorating the East Anglian service the Colne Valley Railway operated their own TPO, 80318, on the Sunday to allow the public the chance of seeing what life on board a TPO was like.
The picture on the left shows where the original apparatus equipment would have been placed.
At the end of the day TPO 80318 is put back in the siding to carry out its normal static duties.

 The Gorge - Steam Trains at Colne Valley
On Monday 21st April 2003 (Easter Monday) we went to Colne Valley Railway in Essex, to look at the railway and ride on a steam train.
It was a fascinating day out - you could wander everywhere and talk to the enthusiastic volunteer staff.

A 2-car diesel mechanical multiple unit built in 1960 at Derby by British Railways.
The Class 115 Diesel Mechanical Multiple Units were constructed for use on the Chiltern Lines out of Marylebone to Banbury and Aylesbury.
This two car set were preserved at the Colne Valley Railway by Suburban Preservation, and moved to the Spa Valley Railway in November 1999 on long term loan.
