Carlos Nazar, supplied two photos of a pair of juvenile colocolo cats that was taken in a cave near the road in the vicinity of the ceremonial village of Isluga (3900 m elevation) in the previous summer (January 1998).
In the case of the colocolo cat, the majority of the specimens detected were in an elevational range between 1500 and 4700 m.
The principal differences between Andean mountain cats and the colocolo are their larger size (30% greater) and its long and dense tail, and the easily appreciated 7 to 9 regular rings on the tail.

The Monito del Monte (Dromiciops australis) is a semi-aboreal South American marsupial which is thought to be more closely related to the marsupials of Australasia than to those of the Americas.
Also known as the Colocolo, it is only a little larger than a mouse: about 8 to 13 cm long with a thick-based, moderately prehensile tail about the same length again.
It has a coat of short, dense, silky fur, brown on the upper side with a number of ashy white patches, and paler underneath.
