Kira Nerys - Memory Alpha   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Kira Nerys was born in the Dahkur Province on Bajor and lived a large part of her life in the Bajoran Singha refugee camp.
Kira first met Odo at the time of the crime, and even though much of the evidence pointed to her, she told Odo that she did not kill him because she was in the underground and was sabotaging a different part of the station.
Kira was asked by Captain Sisko and Admiral Ross to help Legate Damar organize the nascent Cardassian uprising against the Dominion and teach them the finer art of guerilla warfare due to her extensive experience in the Bajoran Resistance.

 STARTREK.COM : Biography
Young Kira Nerys faced the same terrifying and brutal life faced by many of her Bajoran brethren: her father, a farmer or gardener by trade, was killed fighting in the resistance while her mother, an icon painter, died of malnutrition in the Singha Refugee Camp when Nerys was 3.
The next year Kira was at Bareil's side when a scandal in a no-win scenario during the occupation dashed his chances to become Kai; a year later she faced his death alone on the eve of his Cardassian peace treaty that Winn would later take the credit for.
Kira was kidnapped in 2371 and surgically altered to be Cardassian as a pawn in an elaborate Obsidian Order plot to expose her alter ego's father, a powerful legate, as a Cardassian dissident; after his rescue they formed an odd bond.

Kira turned in a circle, dizzy from the helpless terror she saw reflected in so many eyes, so many more glazing as they greeted death -- and saw something so unlikely that the disaster's full impact finally gripped her, sank its dark teeth into her and held on tightly.
Kira walked on -- and then she was in the haze, like a mist of darkness, and the light was as bright as a star's, only a few meters in front of her.
Kira took a few deep breaths, talking herself through it, letting go...and by the time she reached ops she was through the very worst of it, and prepared to bear the weight of another day.

In addition, Kira was also attracted to Tom Riker despite her involvement with Bareil; after his theft of the U.S.S. Defiant, she eventually talked him into taking Dukat and Sisko's deal of surrender with a rare Cardassian prison term that she vows she'll help him escape from some day.
Because she feels ill at ease with idle time and her rough childhood allowed little room for fantasy, she usually hates holosuites as a waste of time and prefers instead the real thing - a trait Dax is trying to help change; despite that spare outlook, she does use feminine toiletries like epidellic skin lotion.
On the other hand, she has admitted to me her longtime trust in Odo was truly shaken by his recent revelation of a rush to justice in 2366 in helping execute three innocent Bajorans on Terok Nor during the occupation - a highly atypical scenario for the constable.

Kira was the only reason I watched for the first two seasons.
Every time she had an episode or arc to herself, part of her belief system--about her own people, the Cardassians, the prophets, was turned inside out, and she was forced to adapt and find a way to do the best for Bajor.
Kira sort of drifted out of the spotlight when all the other characters caught up to her in S5, but the Kira-on-Cardassia endgame was almost poetic.
