Pride's Purge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pride's Purge was the occasion when troops under the command of Colonel Thomas Pride forcibly removed from the House of Commons all those who were not supporters of the Grandees in the Army and the Independents.
When the Commissioners returned with the King's answers, which were far short of what was hoped, the House of Commons eventually declared them acceptable by 129 to 83 early in the morning of December 5, 1648 (though this was technically a vote on whether the vote should be called).
Pride's Purge was reversed on February 21, 1660 when the secluded members were restored in a preparation for the restoration.

The Colonel's dignity is important to him; he would much rather write a letter requesting the change of lawyer by hand than ask someone to type the letter as a favor to him.
The novel begins with the Colonel preparing his wife a last cup of coffee by scraping a coffee can with a knife, mixing "bits of rust" with "the last scrapings of ground coffee." (p.1) Themes of oppression are counter-balanced by tenacity shown in the Colonel's long wait.
The Colonel knows that the state of affairs is not in order and most likely there will never be anything for him, and yet year after year, hoping that the day will come, he waits for the letter.

Colonel Spigot is the epitome of a Thembrian soldier: stern, authoritative, unyielding, and unquestioningly loyal to the interests of his Motherland.
Unfortunately, the colonel’s pride is matched only by his stubbornness, a truth often demonstrated in his dealings with foreign relations or the errant civilian planes that regularly skirt the border of Thembrian airspace.

M165 Great Britain, Parliament, English Parliamentary Acts
With the execution of King Charles I on January 30, 1649, the sole political agency in England was Parliament, but the true power in the land lay in the hands of Oliver Cromwell and the New Model Army which he commanded.
Pride's Purge, in which Colonel Pride expelled those members of Parliament who Cromwell saw as dangerous, left only a partial or "rump" parliament.
Cromwell governed with the Rump Parliament in a Commonwealth until 1653, when he moved to have the now troublesome Rump Parliament replaced with a body of men that were more concerned with spiritual affairs.
