Colonel Sun; Reviews & Ratings - CBn Forums
Colonel Sun is one of the better non-Fleming novels: exciting, violent, excellently written, and with a version of 007 closer to the original than any of the follow-up books.
Colonel Sun is primarily a realistic and often violent tale with an lack of gadgetry.
Colonel Sun is a bit reminiscent of Doctor No, but aside from his lengthy chatter pre-torture, he's a deviously successful villain and comes to a good end.

Colonel Sun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Colonel Sun was the first continuation James Bond novel published after the 1964 death of the character's creator, Ian Fleming.
Colonel Sun has the distinction of being the only non-Fleming James Bond novel adapted as a comic strip by the British newspaper, the Daily Express, and also syndicated worldwide.
A notable difference between the novel and the strip is that the main villain, Colonel Sun, is an agent of SPECTRE in the strip.

Colonel Sun - James Bond Literature Forum - ajb007.co.uk
On the whole,Colonel Sun is an excellent Fleming pastiche,it's only weakness being that it doesn't maintain it's brilliant opening momentum,it drags toward the middle of the story, and most unfortunately, after a superb beginning, has a rather anticlimactic climax. On the whole, however, this book is filled with wonderful moments.Too bad Amis didn't try his hand at another Bond or two...
The beach setting represents the novel's locations in Greece and on Colonel Sun's island; and the all-seeing eye where the sun should be, of course, is Col. Sun himself--who orchestrates all the events in the novel.
It's been a while since I've read Colonel Sun but I think that parts of the plot and the overall theme of the novel were the basisis of DAD.

Colonel Sun (James Bond) by Robert Markham
After Ian Fleming's death in 1964, Glidrose decided to continue the Bond franchise with a series of well-known authors each writing a book under the pen-name Robert Markham.
However, only Kingsley Amis took up the offer, and in 1968 his 007 novel, 'Colonel Sun' was published.
There is also a suggestion that Amis finished 'The Man With The Golden Gun' after Fleming's death, and that Colonel Sun was his incentive from Glidrose.

Robert Markham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For the pseudonym, the name "George Glidrose" was initially suggested by Peter Fleming, Ian Fleming's brother, however, this was shot down by Jonathan Cape who claimed the name had no selling power.
Markham was then chosen and the novel Colonel Sun was subsequently published in 1968 to generally good reviews and moderate sales.
Amis' involvement as a continuation author was not a secret, and some early editions of the book identified Amis as the author, though the main Robert Markham credit remained.
