Disclaimer: We did *not* explore much of Uruguay; all we did was take a ferry from Buenos Aires across the Rio de la Plata (which is the widest river in the world or a finger of the Atlantic Ocean, whichever you prefer) to Colonia del Sacramento, a cute little seaside town in Uruguay.
I was planning on taking the ferry to Colonia, or to Montevideo as a side trip.
Hopefully there is room at the Possada you recommended in Colonia de Sacramento, Uruguay for my wife and I this New Years.

It took me couple hours to walk through every street of downtown and climb up the light house to have a better view of the city.

After the falls we made another over-nighter on a bus and upon arriving in Buenos Aires again got on the next Ferry across the River to Uruguay.
We stayed in Colonia - the old town is beautiful - cobblestoned streets and well preserved architecture.
Buenous Aires had lots of old vehicles onthe road - but Uruguay had even more - we saw old model A fords bumpling along the cobbles, and lots of old american pick up trucks...

 Colonia, Uruguay?
We spent a day in Colonia and yes it really is an historic sleepy place.
It runs EZE-MVD AFAIK so Colonia is just a pick up spot.
I too agree it is probably too small to justify a good hotel but still what a perfect destination would be after a few days in fast lanes of BA.
