 Colonial Governors
OF the colonial governors sent from Britain to the American colonies before the Revolution, and of the provincial governors from that time to 1789, upwards of forty were of Scottish birth or descent.
Although he held the appointment of Governor of Virginia, he does not, however, appear ever to have been in the colony, as during his brief term of office he was detained in Boston in negotiations with the New England authorities in raising an army for the ensuing campaign.
In 1781, when the colony was in its most desperate and trying position he accepted the position of governor, and took part in the siege of Yorktown as commander of the Virginia militia.

Alexander Spotswood, the Virginia colony's governor, was in the midst of a quarrel with influential members of the local gentry.
Instead, as the governor himself observed, they "got together all the turbulent and disaffected Burgesses, had an entertainment of their own in the Burgesses House and invited the mobb to a bonfire where they were plentifully supplied with liquors."
Governor Spotswood himself provided funds for the hire of two light, fast sloops, which slipped stealthily out of the Chesapeake Bay into the Atlantic on a course set for Ocracoke Inlet on November 17.

Between 1652 and 1656, William Stone's commission as governor from the proprietor was contested by the Parliamentary Commissioners.
Cecilius Calvert, infant son of the Lord Proprietary, was the nominal governor from June to October 1676, but actually the province was governed by the deputy governors.
Succeeded Wharton as deputy governor and later, in October 1676, was commissioned governor by the Lord Proprietary.

Though religious toleration had been introduced into other colonies previously by individual proprietors or governors, this was the earliest legislative enactment in America asserting the principle of religious toleration.
Governor Berkeley, who had been Governor since 1642, had Charles II proclaimed as King and invited him to assume the administration of Virginia.
According to the Act all English possessions could allow only English or Colonial vessels entrance to their ports; certain articles, produced in the colonies, such as sugar and tobacco, were known as "enumerated" goods, and were to be shipped to England only.

 Priceless Spanish Colonial Artwork Donated to Palace of the Governors
With Collier as President and the Archbishop of Santa Fe James P. Davis as an ex-officio member, the International Institute of Iberian Colonial Art was incorporated in 1967 with the goal of preserving what remained of colonial religious artwork and architecture produced in the former colonies of Spain and Portugal.
A portion of the Iberian collection was published in "Cambios: The Spirit of Transformation in Spanish Colonial Art" (University of New Mexico Press, 1992) with essays by Palmer and Donna Pierce in conjunction with a major Spanish Colonial art exhibit at the Santa Barbara Museum.
The Palace of the Governors, built from 1609 to 1610, is the state history museum for New Mexico and is housed in the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States.
