Colonization of the outer solar system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some of the moons of the outer planets of the solar system are large enough to be suitable places for colonization.
The idea of using asteroids as a source of minerals (asteroid mining) for space colonization is common in science fiction, since they are plentiful, rocky, and have low escape velocities.
There are some difficulties related to colonization of Europa; one significant problem is a high level of radiation from Jupiter's radiation belt, which is approximately 10 times as strong as Earth's Van Allen radiation belts.

Astrobiology: The Living Universe - Colonizing the Solar System
As mentioned in the Mars Case Study, Mars, not the Moon, is likely to be the first place in the solar system that is colonized.
As a result, either the colonization of asteroids is a dead-end, or some sort of artificial gravity would have to be induced (discussed in Artificial Gravity).
This is of course understandable since the conditions on any of the gas giants or their moons are far worse than those on Mars or any asteroid (with the possible exception of Titan which is known to have large amounts of organic chemicals, but at the moment is still much too distant for human exploration).

The plane of the solar system, called the Ecliptic which runs along the Zodiacal belt of constellations, is tilted about 60 degrees to the plane of the Milky Way.
The cloud of gas which are solar system formed in began to rotate the planets simply formed within the same rotation as the cloud they came from.
The reason for this is that when the solar system formed, it was formed from a collapsing disk of spinning gases, with a bulge in the center which became the Sun.

 Orbital Space Colonies
Colonization of those bodies is in fact much less desirable than orbital colonization, even though Mars and the Moon are the only practical solid bodies suitable for colonization in the solar system, at least for the next few centuries.
Space solar power can be generated by solar cells on large panels as with current satellites, or by concentrators that focus sunlight on a fluid, perhaps water, which is vaporized and used to turn turbines.
Colonizing the Moon with nuclear fuel shipped from Earth will also be expensive, and we can probably rule it out as a practical approach to generating large amounts of power.

 Jupiter, the largest planet
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and the largest in the solar system.
At its outer edge, material appears to rotate in four to six days; near the center, motions are small and nearly random in direction.
Closer to the planet, the Voyager spacecraft discovered a faint system of rings with material that must be continuously renewed and is probably produced by the disintegration of small moonlets imbedded within the rings.

Sails using the solar wind or only the light from stars are less efficient at larger distance from the Sun.
In science fiction, solar sails are encountered from the 1920s, with early models being giant, multiple-sail craft.
The laser-powered solar sail is seemingly the only way of getting a light sail to be effective on interstellar journeys.

Solar system forms differently - Alternate History Discussion Board
For argument's sake, let the system be located in a more densely packed star cluster - not so close to the other stars where the planetary system would not form, but at a much closer distance, say within 1-2 light years from the nearest star.
Also, due to the presense of the binary star, the outer worlds of the Solar System are much warmer, and some moons of the gas giant planets might in fact be water worlds, somewhat similar to early Earth.
For the outer planet moons- there isn't any big enough to hold atmosphere which could support terrestrial life so the only affect having extra sunlight would have for life would be making it easier for humans in colonization of the area in the future.

National Institute for Discovery Science: The Reenchantment of the Solar System: A Proposed Search for Local ET’s
The originating star systems for these advanced beings could be solar-type stars that fortuitously approach our Sun within a light year or so at intervals of about a million years or nearby stars that have left the main sequence, prompting interstellar migration.
The solar system was enchanted by the presence of those gods and goddesses of the ancient pantheon — called Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn by citizens of the Roman world.
Stars in the solar vicinity are next examined to attempt to determine the frequency of post-main-sequence stars from which interstellar migration may be occurring.

During a single beam observation, a solar system body is tracked as it traverses the sky and any detected emissions are examined for doppler correlations.
Solar System SETI targets are vastly closer than even the nearest star system Alpha Centauri, which is 4.4 light years away.

A probe was, in fact, scheduled for this decade, but the bloated cost of ISS, among other programs, sealed the doom for such a mission, and it was cut from NASA funding.
