The Colonne di San Lorenzo is the best-known Roman ruin in Milan.
It is located in front of the Basilica of San Lorenzo.
It is a square with a row of columns on either side, which were taken from a temple or public bath house dating from the 2nd century.

I just may give it a go at reading the books (I just found out that there are thirteen!)- I can see how some of the things could have worked better in writing.
On the way back past Colonne di San Lorenzo I really missed my SLR - the site looked great all lit up.
The picture below does not give the justice to the site, but such are unfortunately the shortcomings of 'fit-in-your-pocket' cameras.

Don't know whether bars and pubs are allowed to set up tables outside, probably it's too early...someone else might be able to answer this.
Also the area around the Colonne di San Lorenzo come to life in spring summer time, so might be worth a visit.
Whatever you decide you can always change your mind and move on to another spot, they are easely accessible with the metro so you are not stuck with one choice for the whole evening.

For Milan, I'll suggest some street photography in the porta ticinese - colonne di san lorenzo area.
In Milan I would suggest the streets around Duomo: no cars, people on shopping; go towards La Scala theatre and then Piazza Castello, or in the opposite direction toward Universita' degli Studi (built around an historical cloister).
The only museum I would mention is Pinacoteca di Brera.
