Color commentator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A color (or colour) commentator, sometimes known as a color analyst, is a member of the broadcasting team for a sporting event who assists the play-by-play announcer by filling in any time when play is not in progress.
The color commentator provides expert analysis and background information, such as statistics, strategy and injury reports, on the teams and athletes, and occasionally light humor.
Some of the notable color commentators appear on these broadcast were General Al Gray (Ret.), former Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, and Col. Harry Summers, noted military analyst.

Color has a way of creeping into our cheeks — "red as a beet" — or our personalities — "green with envy." A "color commentator" relates important statistics and interesting anecdotes about a sporting event.
Colors that grab our attention the fastest are those at the warm end of the spectrum, so it's no surprise that the most important element of a design is red or another vibrant, warm color.
Color experts have determined that "classifier colors," such as burgundy, narrow the market for a certain product, while "declassifier colors," such as orange, tend to broaden the appeal of a product.

In the United Kingdom the terminology is different: a play-by-play announcer is called a commentator.
In Germany, most soccer matches feature just a single play-by-play announcer, without a color commentator.
In the United States, the term "colur analyst" is used far more frequently than "color commentator" though they both have about the same meaning.

Can A Man Who Has A Problem With People Of Color Be A Color Commentator On 'Monday Night Football'?
He recently auditioned for a job as color commentator on ABC-TV's "Monday Night Football." The tryout followed weeks of self-promotion by the self-styled "truth detector" to the millions who listen daily to his syndicated radio show on about 600 stations.
What is clear is that his expressed views on racial matters--from the spiteful to the sophomoric--would make him an odd color commentator.
