 Color
Colors are perceiver-dependent but hybrid properties: to have a specific color is to have some intrinsic feature by virtue of which the object has the power to appear in a distinctive way (e.g., as in 4).
Colors are what fill in the outlines of these forms, they are the stuff out of which visual phenomena are built up; our visual world consists solely of differently formed colors; and objects, from the point of view of seeing them, that is, seen objects, are nothing other than colors of different kinds and forms.
Color science is a large field, but it is built around the way that colors appear and to the conditions under which colors can be perceived, and the causes which lead to the perception of colors.

Irreplaceable hue. (color field painting) - Artforum International - HighBeam Research   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Color field painting and 'sculpitecture,' a form that evolved from color field painting, are epitomes of the decadent art that was typical of the 1960s.
For if the counterpoint of color as weight and color as recession/advance in the "target" paintings of the late '50s and early '60s remains striking, though in a somewhat academic way, Noland's wall-length horizontal stripe paintings, such as Via Blues, 1967, are as centrifugal as the earlier paintings were centripetal.
Color Field painting might now be better called an art of the factitious or "virtual real." Its stubborn attachment to illusion, even in the absence of representation, makes what looked like the wrong turn thirty years ago feel surprisingly relevant.

The perception of color is influenced by biology (some people are born seeing colors differently or not at all; see color blindness), long-term history of the observer, and also by short-term effects such as the colors nearby.
Note that the color experience of a given light mixture may vary with absolute luminosity, because both rods and cones are active at once in the eye, with each having different color curves, and rods taking over gradually from cones as the brightness of the scene is reduced.
Structural color is a property of some surfaces that are scored with fine parallel lines, formed of many thin parallel layers, or otherwise composed of periodic microstructures on the scale of the color's wavelength, to make a diffraction grating.

If the color map has position-dependent data, then linear interpolation will be used to derive colors for data values in the data field between those given in the "positions" component of the map (see Figure 1).
When a color map is applied to this field using the Color module, the data value 3.5 is used as a lookup value into the "positions" component of the color map.
Data Explorer interpolates between these two colors to derive the color [0.5.5], or dark cyan, which is then placed in the "colors" component of the data field as the color corresponding to the data value 3.5.

Color Television System Development - CBS System
The CBS field sequential color system in its simplest form consisted of a rotating color wheel of red, blue, and green filter segments in front of a monochrome camera, feeding a fl and white CRT receiver viewed through a second rotating color wheel.
At the conclusion of the color hearings in 1950, there was much pressure by the color television proponents for the FCC to immediately adopt a color standard.
The color wheel assembly was driven by a 1748-rpm motor that was kept in synchronization by being in series with an AC saturable reactor transformer.

COLOR, MENTAL LOCATION, AND THE VISUAL FIELD Color subjectivism is the view that color properties are mental properties of our visual sensations, perhaps identical with prop- erties of neural states, and that nothing except visual sensations and other mental states exhibits color properties.
Color physi- calism, by contrast, holds that colors are exclusively properties of visible physical objects and processes.
And the color an object looks to us to have is a function not of the spectral reflectance itself, but of the ratio of activa- tion of those three light-sensitive elements that the spectral reflectance results in.

Art Education Articles - Color Coding
Current styles of teaching color first emerged at a time when new technologies were drastically increasing the availability of synthetic pigments in pure, high chroma hues and when artists were eschewing such extra-visual matters as narrative and iconography in favor of abstraction and formal issues.
Virtually all Western color curricula teach that the field of color is best understood by reference to a fixed set of descriptive qualities that can be summarized by a chart: a hue circle, a value scale, a chroma scale.
I am suggesting that we contextualize current color exercises in the history of modern art and culture and reexamine the values that are supported or diminished by the curriculum’s underlying assumptions and structural metaphors.

The color field displays the range for the remaining two components--one on the horizontal axis, one on the vertical.
For example, if the current color is fl and you click the red component (R) using the RGB color model, the color slider displays the range of color for red (0 is at the bottom of the slider and 255 is at the top).
As you adjust the color using the color field and color slider, the numerical values change to reflect the new color.

- Paintings with solid areas of color covering the entire canvas, as exemplified in the work of Mark Rothko (American, 1903-1970), Kenneth Noland (American, 1924-), and Jules Olitski (American, 1922-).
A type of Abstract Expressionism, these artists were interested in the lyrical or atmospheric effects of vast expanses of color, filling the canvas, and by suggestion, beyond it to infinity.
Most color-field paintings are large -- meant to be seen up close so that the viewer is immersed in a color environment.

Tate | Glossary | Colour Field Painting
Term originally used to describe the work from about 1950 of the Abstract Expressionist painters Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still, which was characterised by large areas of a more or less flat single colour.
It differed from Abstract Expressionism in that these artists eliminated both the emotional, mythic or religious content of the earlier movement, and the highly personal and painterly or gestural application associated with it.
In Britain there was a major development of Colour Field painting in the 1960s in the work of Robyn Denny, John Hoyland, Richard Smith and others.

Abstract: We study instanton properties in a color electro-magnetic field.

For simplicity, the external color field is set to be a constant abelian magnetic (electric) one.

 MFA Boston: Exhibition: Color-Field Painting
Used to describe works that were created in the United States between the mid-1950s and the 1970s, the term color-field painting evokes a large canvas seen as a field of color, often the result of thinned paint poured onto unprimed canvas.
Works in the exhibition by representative color-field artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, and Jules Olitski are striking for their luminosity, where the canvas is emphasized as a textured, depthless color-field with geometric motifs highlighting its color intensity.
Through a careful selection of works from the permanent collection, this exhibition provides a fresh look at color-field painting and reveals its wide range of pictorial vocabularies.
