Color management - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Color management is a term used in computer environments which describes a controlled conversion between the colors of various color devices, such as scanners, digital cameras, monitors, TV screens, film printers, printers, offset presses, and corresponding media.
Color management helps to achieve the same appearance on all of these devices, provided the device is capable of delivering the needed color intensities.
Color management for the printer is sometimes implemented at several levels at the same time, such as in the application, at the OS driver level, and in the PostScript RIP.

Color management is the process by which you try to match color conditions in a set of devices (e.g., scanner, monitor and printer).
A reference color space is a device-independent theoretical color model used by a CMM (color engine) for translating colors from one device's gamut to another.
This preserves the spectral relationship between colors and prevents "clipping," which is where distinctly different colors in one color space appear the same in the destination color space.

 Tutorials - Color Management
"Color management" is a process where the color characteristics for every device in the imaging chain is known precisely and utilized to better predict and control color reproduction.
Color management cannot guarantee identical color reproduction, as this is rarely possible, but it can at least give you more control over any changes which may occur.
These "out-of-gamut colors" occur with nearly every conversion and are called a "gamut mismatch." A color management module (CMM) performs all calculations needed to translate from one space into another, and is the workhorse of color management.

If the system is not color managed, both monitor and printer would have displayed their native value 200 which is different from intended value to be displayed.
Recall that the color gamut of a monitor is smaller than a printer and either of these devices have a gamut smaller than the color gamut of human eye.

Each paper and ink combination on which you print will produce a different result from the same color values in an image, so that it is important to produce a printer profile for use with the application you are printing your images from, so that the image values are corrected for the paper/ink combination.
