The state, with an average elevation of 2,070 m (6,800 ft), is the highest of all the states.
Colorado was admitted to statehood on August 1, 1876, during the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and today its official nickname is the Centennial State.
Colorado became the 38th state to join the Union on August 1, 1876, and John L. Routt, the last territorial governor, was elected the first governor of the state of Colorado.

2000 - Two projects begin that will complete the widening of S.H. 82 between Glenwood Springs and Aspen: between Aspen Airport Business Center and Buttermilk began this summer and was completed in the fall of 2001, and Snowmass Canyon began in the fall of 2000, and its completion is scheduled for the fall of 2005.

An effort to push states to toughen seat belt laws is stalling despite almost $500 million in federal incentives, according to a group representing state highway safety agencies.
The study found that crash victims in states with primary seat belt laws have a 17% greater chance of surviving than those in states with only secondary laws.
Each May, states determine the rate by observing samples of drivers and counting how many are belted.

On the south side of town, SH 82 becomes a divided expressway with a 65mph speed limit, and hugs the east side of the Roaring Fork River valley toward Carbondale.
Eventually SH 82 passes above tree line and reaches the summit of the pass at 12,095 ft. The east and west side of the passes are very different in character.
