The term is correctly applied to any selection sung in this manner by any voice part, but it is also used as a noun to describe soprano voice roles characterized by this style and by embellishments such as runs and trills, or the female voice that sings such roles.
An example of a coloratura selection for a female voice is Allelujah, by Mozart, which may be arranged for and sung by a properly trained contralto, mezzo soprano or soprano.
An example of a coloratura selection for a male voice is the tenor aria Every Valley Shall be Exalted from Handel's Messiah.

She was one of the last of the true coloratura sopranos.
Pagliughi made her debut at the age of 17 as Gilda at the Nazionale in Milan and was soon replacing Toti dal Monte in the “extra” performances at La Scala.
We tend today to think of the coloratura soprano as a sweet-voiced girl with more or less secure high notes, and with agility and fluency enough to get through the arias of Zerbinetta and the Queen of the Night.

I am studying to be a opera singer. I am a colo... - Answerbag
First of all, it's perfectly possible to be a coloratura mezzo or contralto -- coloratura simply refers to ones ability to sing the kind of florid vocal passages typically found in the works of Rossini and Mozart (as well as other bel canto composers).
A lyric coloratura soprano, as a "fach", or vocal category, typically sings the roles of Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto, Olympia in Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman, Norina in Donizetti's Don Pasquale and Zerbinetta in Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos.
A dramatic coloratura has more heft to the voice, and is the voice type able to sing a number of heavier, florid roles in Mozart, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi: for example Fiordiligi in Cosi and Constanze in Seraglio.

 Semantic Compositions: Coloratura donnas
In the previous post, your host had thought he was coining a sardonic reference to an egotistical singer by terming him a "coloratura bass".
Surprisingly, while there are a few tokens of the phrase floating around, none of the 16 apparently distinct uses of it carried the "prima donna" wisecrack that your host was trying to imply.
A cursory inspection of the resulting hits suggests that for the most part, "prima donna" is used to mean "leading lady" with no overtones of the hysteria or ego that Webster's calls sense #2 of the phrase.

 Coloratura Sopranos
Considered one of the most difficult roles in the standard coloratura repertoire, this role from Mozart's Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) really only involves two relatively short arias and an ensemble finale, about a total of 12 minutes on stage.
But Mozart wrote two of the most treacherous arias for this evil character that contain a total of five high F's (the highest note in the standard repertoire).
Another reason the role is so difficult is that it really wants a big, dramatic voice to embody the power and rage of the character, yet most sopranos who can sing reliable High F's, have smaller coloratura voices.

Amelita Galli-Curci, hailed as "the world's greatest coloratura soprano" in the 1910's and 20's, spent her retirement years during the 1950's and 60's in Rancho Santa Fe and La Jolla.
Not showing the strains that were to beset her later, she sang a battery of coloratura arias including the "Caro nome" from Rigoletto, the "Bell Song" from Lakme, the "Polonaise" from Mignon, and the "Mad Scene" from Lucia de Lammermoor.
She began shifting away from the coloratura fireworks toward lighter songs in the lyric soprano range.
