Coloratura soprano--a female voice with an 'upper extension' of high notes and a light quality or color which allows the voice to be capable of rapid and highly ornamented passages.
The range for the dramatic soprano is generally somewhat lower than the lyric or lyric-spinto, but often she is called upon to sing high passages for dramatic emphasis, making these roles quite strenuous for younger singers.
Coloratura mezzo--these are roles which, while demanding the use of a lower register or part of the voice, are also required to be flexible and capable of singing highly ornamented, rapid passages.

 TIME.com: Met's New Coloratura -- Nov. 19, 1956 -- Page 1
Soprano Dobbs sounded smooth as cashmere beside the tweedy textures of Tenor Jan Peerce and Baritone Leonard Warren.
She was nervous at first—her vibrato was fast as a canary's, and she heaved her pretty bosom with each breath, which is not regarded good form—but she stopped the show several times, and the bravos rang out like pistol shots when she finished.
Soprano Dobbs has traveled as far and fast as her admirers could have hoped, since she bowed at La Scala as Elvira in Rossini's L'ltaliana in Algeri three years ago (TIME, March 16, 1953).

The soprano writing is stratospherically cruel in its tessitura, the intervals in the lines wide-spaced and ragged, yet she consistently managed to take it phrase by phrase rather than note by not.
The young soprano made excellent impressions in past seasons with the company as the Queen of the Night in Mozart's Magic Flute and as Marie in Donizetti's comedy, The Daughter of the Regiment.
"Soprano Lisa Saffer was a dramatically convincing Marie who exhibited from a beautiful but diminutive stature a voice of dazzling and heroic proportions, completely unerring in musicianship and control and note-perfect in every trill.

First of all, it's perfectly possible to be a coloratura mezzo or contralto -- coloratura simply refers to ones ability to sing the kind of florid vocal passages typically found in the works of Rossini and Mozart (as well as other bel canto composers).
A lyric coloratura soprano, as a "fach", or vocal category, typically sings the roles of Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto, Olympia in Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman, Norina in Donizetti's Don Pasquale and Zerbinetta in Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos.
A dramatic coloratura has more heft to the voice, and is the voice type able to sing a number of heavier, florid roles in Mozart, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi: for example Fiordiligi in Cosi and Constanze in Seraglio.
