Colosse was a city where Christianity had to compete with the dualistic thinking material or spiritual concepts brought forth by the ancient Greeks, the rigid legalism of Judiasm, angel worship, and the pagan polytheistic occultism that was flourishing.
Colosse is a city located in Asia Minor in what is today modern day Turkey, It was located close to Ephesus, where Paul founded the church numerous years before this leter was written.
Along with the dualistic thinking, Colosse was affected by the weather, earthquakes, and the emergence of commerce rival Laodicea to the point where the city was left abandoned and the descendants moved to Laodicea and Chonai.

Colosse was a city of Phrygia in the Roman province of Asia, located in the south west of Asia Minor.
Colosse recovered from the earthquake, but as the neighboring cities, Hierapolis and Laodicea, increased in importance, Colosse declined until the 7th and 8th centuries when it was overrun by the Saracents.
The Church of Colosse was involved with certain worldy philosophies and "wisdom." (2:18-19) There was some sort of heresy in Colosse which Paul was addressing at this point in his letter.

Yet, another letter written at the same time to a church near Colosse does contain numerous personal references (see The Letter to Laodicea for a further discussion of the letter to Philemon).
Colosse is just a short distance from Colosse so it is possible that Paul also visited the brethren in Colosse, but we have no record of a visit.

The church at Colosse was very much influenced by what they picked up from their surroundings.
Add all this to a belief in Jesus and the faith of the Colossians was syncretistic, it was in danger of becoming a mishmash of inconsistencies.
