 How Inkjet Colour Printers Work
Producing a colour image on inkjet on inkjet paper is far different than producing the image on the monitor.
In addition to those base colours, by using clever combinations of masses of dots printer close together, an optical illusion is created and the eye is fooled into thinking it is observing a continuous colour of different hue.
Now in the high end inkjet printers the manufacturers are starting to use half colour shades to give even better image quality so that you can get just as good photo prints from your inkjet printer as you would from getting your digital images processed at a photo laboratory.

World Wide Words: Shades of Meaning
In modern usage it frequently means much the same as colour (the first sense both in the Concise Oxford Dictionary and Chambers’ 21st Century Dictionary is given as “colour, tint or shade”) though with a sense, more precise than that of colour, of focusing on subtle variations between shades of colour.
The Concise Oxford essays “the attribute of a colour by virtue of which it is discernible as red, green, etc”, a cut-down version of its big brother’s definition.
One is variously called saturation or chroma (roughly how intense the colour is, or more formally how much it departs from white or grey; chroma was not first used by Munsell but he almost certainly independently reinvented it, based on the Greek word meaning “colour”).

With spot colors, like the Pantone colors we use, the cost of printing can be reduced when you are only using one colour (in addition to fl) because only one ink roller is needed and there is no cause to create a four-plate layer.
Perfect colour matches are critical and the Pantone system is the best way to make them happen.
