Decorative Painting Resources | Understanding Colour
A colour’s value is increased, or lightened, by adding white or another lighter value colour to it.
Intermediate colours are derived by mixing a primary and its closest secondary colour on the colour wheel.
Colour schemes are a systematic way of using the colour wheel to put colours together to create colour harmony.

Rick McDiarmid - Colour vs Value
Value' in painting is defined as the relationship between light and dark.
At this point it is worth revisiting the 3 dimensions of colour that are most important as the basis of colour knowledge for the painter.
Determining the relative value of a colour or coloured shape means comparison to our value scale from white to fl.

 Albert Henry Munsell
He intodruces 100 steps for colour "hue", starting with five main colours and five additional colours, and adopts an ordering system with 10 units of colour "value" and an open scale called "chroma" (similar to saturation).
The variation between the brightness of pure chromatic colours is too great to be arranged in sequence along the equator: yellow, for example, is brighter than red, which is in turn brighter than violet.
His parameters are hue, value (the index for brightness) and chroma (the gradations of saturation).

In section four the value of adaptationist speculation is defended and in the final section, section five, I discuss the basis for a non-objectivist theory of colour perception that is compatible with the adaptationist strategy.
In attempting to understand human colour vision biologically we begin with a simple objectivism as to chromatic perceptual states and suppose that (a) they represent objective properties of the distal environment, and (b) an adaptive advantage is confered in virtue of such representation.

This colour system is attributed to "Smith" around 1978 and used to be called the hexcone colour model.
Value is similar to luninance except it also varies the colour saturation.
If the colour space is represented by disks of varying lightness then the hue and saturation are the equivalent to polar coordinates (r,theta) of any point in the plane.

Photoshop 8 Colour Management Page 1
The basic concept underlying colour management is to ensure that colour data is processed in a consistent and predictable way throughout the entire imaging workflow.
So the main benefit offered by colour management is that the process of colour correction can be undertaken in the knowledge that the image displayed on the monitor is an accurate visual representation of the original subject, and that the final print will accurately reflect the colours of the displayed image.
Photoshop CS continues to use document/image specific colour settings, which means that the colour space of each document is independent of others that may be open on the Photoshop desktop.

To avoid reducing the chroma of the mixture, use the Neutral Gray of the same value as the colour you are trying to mix, or mix a gray from the fl produced with your Green and Red mixture with Zinc or Titanium White.
It is also a general rule that the lighter the original value of a colour, the less dramatic the value shift when you add Titanium White.
The shift in value is not noticeable in colours with light values such as Hansa Yellow Medium so, be aware of the possible shifts in value of acrylic colours.

The colours are associated to the original colour such that requesting the same modified colour avoids creating a new colour object and destruction of the main colour causes the derived to loose a reference.

 Colour Ramping for Data Visualisation
This note introduces the most commonly used colour ramps for mapping colours onto a range of scalar values as is often required in data visualisation.
The most basic mapping of some scalar value to a colour ramp is to use either an intensity ramp from fl to a single colour or use the greyscale ramp from fl to white.
On the colour cube this is a diagonal line between the two opposite corners, the red, green, blue components are all the same.

 Colour data structures
The maximum pixel value of the labeled image is 23, so there are 24 regions: 0 is the background, 1 to 16 are the other connected regions, 17 is the character U and 23 is the character P. The pixel values corresponding to the three small circles of the logos are: 1, 10 and 16.
A colour table can be built to assign pixel values 0 the colour white, pixel values 1, 10 and 16 the colour red, and the rest to fl.
If a colour table is used, each pixel can have just one value, an index to a table of width 3 representing the number of possible colours in the image.

Bijuterii - despre diamante   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Diamonds with a J-Z colour grade usually have yellow shading that can be detected by the naked eye; however, a well cut stone with good proportions will still release the brilliance and fire of a less coloured diamond, dispersing light in such a way as to create a beautiful stone.
Such diamonds have so much colour that they are not graded on the normal scale D-Z. Believe it or not, these fancy diamonds are particularly rare, and like their colourless counterparts, can also come attached to a high price tag.
The value of a stone is affected by a combination of qualities including shape, clarity, cut, and carat weight, as well as its colour.

Once a colour is chosen with the colour sampler (left mouse click or 'enter' key) its hex value will appear in the 'hex value' text box and the results section will be updated to reflect the brightness and colour differences for the currently selected colour combination.
The 'Full Results' displays the the colour values tested, result values for the test and what the pass/fail criteria are and indicates whether the contrast was found to be sufficient/insufficient.
Note: The method of determining the colour value transformations for the 3 types of colour deficiency is from an algorithm described by Hans Brettel, Francoise Vienot and John Mollon in a paper which appeared in the Journal of the Optical Society of America V14, #10 pp2647.

To truly represent a colour, 24 bits are used : 8 bits each for the amount of red, green and blue in the colour.
These colours will not necessarily be the same as the colours in the system and hardware palette, so Windows works out how best to match colours in a logical palette with those in the system palette.
Usually, an image's pixel values are indices to the image's colour table, which is used to get the 24 bit colour associated with the pixel.

When the gif is painted on the web page by your browser, any pixels that use the transparent colour value are totally invisible; to all intents and purposes those pixels were never painted in the first place, so the background colour or image will show through.
By doing this we are telling the applet to recognize a wider range of pixel values as being close to the single "true" colour value used by the original image before any anti-aliasing techniques were applied.
This value is adjusted divided by a user-supplied fudge factor that estimates the true colour saturation of the original object.

I had to leave lighting on and use the diffuse color to be able to change alpha values.

We also have a "headlight" effect which is done a similar way, and once again the headlight material must have "lighting off" because ambient light will be very low at midnight, but the light must be seen.
