Colt 1911A1 Semi-Automatic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Colt had purchased four designs from Browning in 1896 and, when service trials for a new weapon were called for in 1907, Colt began work on a 0.45in calibre automatic gun.
Modifications to the Colt 1900 Military Model incorporated some of the features of Browning's 1905 design, and thus that pistol became the joint ancestor of both the Colt M1911 (which was the outcome of the modifications) and the Browning High Power 9 mm pistol.
The Colt was not without its faults, however, and it had a love-hate relationship with some of the troops.

 Colt 1911A1 Owner Impression - 1911Forum
The Colt 1911A1 was made for someone like me -- a person who wants a piece of history.
It was refreshing to see a 1911A1 sans large beavertails, skeletonized aluminum triggers, bobbed hammers, serrated front straps, flat mainspring housing, low profile sights, front slide serrations, beveled magazine well, stainless, nickel, teflon, etc. And on top of that it is made by one of the WWII 1911A1 manufacturers, Colt.
In spite of its variances from a genuine WWII 1911A1 and in spite of changes in ownership of Colt, it is the nearest thing one can find to a newly manufactured, authentic Colt 1911A1.

Extra power firing pin springs are a must in Colt pistols prior to the inclusion of the firing pin safety mechanism and are highly recommended in all pistols.
These springs provide an increased margin of safety by helping to reduce the chance of accidental discharge due to the firing pin contacting the cartridge primer in the event of dropping the pistol in a loaded condition or from the increased inertia imposed on the firing pin with extra power recoil springs.

The fact that Colt is made in the USA and the Springfield is not is good enough a reason for me. The Springfield says Springfield, IL USA on their guns...thats pretty deceptive..
