The Colt model 1873 revolver, universally known as the Colt Single Action, Peacemaker, or Frontier, is one of the most popular and legendary small arms in USA.
The Colt 1873 was actually developed by the 1872, based on the patents granted to Charles B. Richards (cartridge conversion of the open-top percussion Colt revolvers) and W. Mason (improved ejector).
Colt Bisleys were intended as a target guns, and had hammers with wider and lower spurs, and a different grip frame.

Furthermore, as the swing-out cylinder had yet to be invented, Colt Peacemakers are loaded by opening a loading gate on the right side of the gun, behind the cylinder.
However, because the Colt's cartridge was more powerful, and because the Colt revolver tended to be a more sturdy gun because of its solid frame, the Colt was the final choice for the U.S. Army and, therefore, for any peace officer or civilian who could afford one.

American Experience | Jesse James | People & Events | PBS
Before Colt came along, most pistols were individually made and had to be fired and reloaded one shot at a time.
Although Colt had problems with his initial designs and his first manufacturing company went bankrupt, the war with Mexico and Westward migration greatly enhanced his gun's popularity.
And by the time of Jesse's bank robberies in the early 1870s, the weapon of choice was the Colt.45 Peacemaker, which combined the bullet, gunpowder, and percussion cap in one cartridge and was therefore much easier to reload.
