With the advent of the Third Generation Single Action, the design of the cylinder hand and bushing were changed to cut costs, the hammer was given a flat-looking unsightly profile and some of the last ones were really slopped through as Colt flooded the market with every possible variation.

Colt's had a cartridge revolver three years before Remington with the open tops and the model P had a two year head start.
Actual deployment of the Colt's Single Action Army revolver began in late 1873, early '74, so that by the time Remington got it's cartridge gun developed, Colt's had the government contract sewn up, AND was selling the guns to the civilian market.
Colt was also a manufacturing giant among the gun makers which has always been part of the reason colts have been very popular.

being a cowboy action shooter, i have a little bit of direct knowlege on this subject but please remember this is all oppinion (oppinion based on experiece and observation but still).
USFA actually occupies the old Colt "dome armory" factory in hartford CT. and are as far as i know the only remaining american "manufacturer" other than colt of SAA pistols all others are itallian clones of varying degrees of finnish ect.
If you go with the Colt or most of the clones you are restricted to low pressure loads and the price you mention would get you a Freedom Arms which is probably one of the finest revolvers made anywhere, by anybody.
