The different versions of the tracks that were cut short for one reason or another are awesome, primarily because you can hear the changes Coltrane made in each song before he arrived at the final and famed album versions.
Coltrane's musical progression from 1959-1961 is clearly captured on the set, defining his period of free jazz between be-bop prophet Charlie Parker and the avant-garde visions of Ornette Coleman and more recently John Zorn.
The Coltrane box is undoubtedly one of the finest sets of the year, catering to Coltrane addicts as well as passive jazz fans curious about the genre's origins.

It's not "impossible" to play, but is heralded as a breakthrough point for Coltrane, in that it proclaimed his mastery of this particular style.
I strongly disagree: Coltrane produced a wide range of astonishing music during his tragically short career and all of it had merit and interest and I would no sooner pit one of his milestones against another than I would say that Beethoven's Ninth is "worse" than his Fifth.
Coltrane was a beautiful person, and his music is beautiful because of it.

Clearly, when I listen to John Coltrane, this was a NEW sound, a different kind of sound for the tenor saxophone.
When I listen to John Coltrane here and know that he had come from Miles' band, and now I listen to “So What?” or “Milestones,” I say, “Damn, he was in a straitjacket.” That's John Coltrane--you NEVER think of John Coltrane in a straitjacket, he's playing all over the place.
