"Columbia, Gem of the Ocean" is an United States patriotic song which was popular in the 19th and early 20th century.
It was used on occasion as an unofficial national anthem in competition with "Hail, Columbia" and "The Star-Spangled Banner" until the latter's formal adoption as the national anthem of the United States in 1931.
For many years, Columbia, Gem of the Ocean's melody was used as the Voice of America's interval signal.

That's how it starts in "Gem of the Ocean," August Wilson's robust new drama of questing characters and changing times, set in 1904 when the legacy of slavery was a living memory.
Although "Gem" is the youngest of the nine plays in one sense, it is obviously the oldest in another, with an old soul personified in the legendary Aunt Ester, wise Christian shaman of the tribe.
But the City of Bones is a gem of the ocean, too, talisman of a tragic history polished by remembrance.
