  New Georgia Encyclopedia: Columbia County
After the Georgia Railroad was laid through the county around 1834-36, new communities, such as the incorporated cities of Harlem and Grovetown, sprang up or began to flourish.
The current county seat, Appling, was chartered in 1816 and was named for Colonel Daniel Appling, a War of 1812 hero from the Columbia County area.
Columbia ranks seventh in median household income among the state's 159 counties.

 New Georgia Encyclopedia: Abraham Baldwin (1754-1807)
The founder of the University of Georgia and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Abraham Baldwin was born on November 22, 1754, in North Guilford, Connecticut.
Receiving a land grant in Wilkes County, Georgia, Baldwin subsequently moved to Columbia County, Georgia (which until 1790 was part of Richmond County).
Once elected to the Georgia state legislature, he developed a comprehensive educational plan that ultimately included land grants from the state to fund the establishment of the University of Georgia (at the time also known as Franklin College) in Athens.

 New Georgia Encyclopedia: Daniel Appling (1787-1817)
Appling, the son of Rebecca and John Appling, was born in Columbia County, Georgia, on or around August 25, 1787.
The Georgia General Assembly voted Colonel Appling a ceremonial sword, but before it could be presented, he died at Fort Montgomery, Alabama, in March 1817.
Appling County was named in his honor, as was the county seat, Appling, of Columbia County.

In the county the population was spread out with 29.60% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 31.00% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 8.00% who were 65 years of age or older.
Columbia County was formed by an act of the Legislature of Georgia on December 10, 1790; it was formed from part of Richmond County (which was one of Georgia's original seven counties; St. Paul's Parish became Richmond County in 1777).
In 1816, Columbia Courthouse was charted as the Town of Appling, named for the Appling family that had donated the land to the county and for Col. John Appling, a local resident that had died in a campaign against the Seminoles.
