The island boasts 2 grocery stores, a butcher, 2 hairdressers, a building supply center, several restaurants and shops, schools and dozens of B and B establishments as camping and hotels are non-existant.
The population of Bowen Island at last count was pegged at around 3,000, but that number dramatically swells when the ‘summer people’ arrive in July to re-inhabit the many cottages owned for generations by returning vacationers.
For starters, life on Bowen Island is dependent on an hourly ferry arrival from the mainland…both to bring supplies and to transport exiting workers and highschool students off.

The first British Pacific Islands possession (1838), the island is officially administered by the British High Commissioner to New Zealand as part of the Pitcairn Islands dependency, which includes three neighboring, uninhabited atolls (Henderson, Ducie, and Oeno).
The island was named in 1767 by Capt. Philip Carteret, a British naval officer, after Robert Pitcairn, the midshipman who first sighted it.
In 1856 overpopulation caused the removal of the inhabitants, at their request, to Norfolk Island, but some soon returned to Pitcairn.
