Columbia was originally the local company distributing and selling Edison phonographs and phonograph cylinders in Washington, D.C, Maryland and Delaware.
Columbia severed its ties to Edison and the North American Phonograph Company in 1893, and thereafter sold only records and phonographs of their own manufacture.
In July of 1912 Columbia decided to concentrate exclusively on disc records, and stopped recording new cylinder records and manufacturing cylinder phonographs, although they continued pressing and selling cylinder records from their back catalogue for a year or two more.

In 1925, Columbia in the U.S. bought out Compo's New England operations and used Compo masters on their 34000-F French-Canadian series, this being one of the few times that a non-Columbia master was used on Columbia records and lending credence to the assumption that Columbia's Canadian operations did not have recording capability.
Columbia's Canadian operations were dropped entirely, as Compo issued ARC material in Canada until 1935-36, and what few Columbia records were sold in Canada were imported U.S. pressings.
As previously mentioned, the operations of Columbia in Canada came to a complete halt in 1934, after the record division of the bankrupt Grigsby-Grunow firm in the U.S. was acquired by the American Record Corporation, whose material was being issued in Canada by the Compo Company.

Columbia succeeded not only because its LP stored more information than the 78 RPM record or showed some improvement in sound over the 78, but importantly, because its LP was marketed with inexpensive and reliable hardware.
Columbia went to Philco, which produced 'the clam,' a turntable, pick-up and tone arm combination in a bakelite case with a lid that, in fact, closed like a 'clamshell.' The new player was to be offered at $29.95, ready to be plugged into existing radios, television sets or phonographs.

Columbia capitalized at once on their new acquisition: between June 10 and 16, 1955, just weeks after signing his contract, Gould spent four days in Columbia’s 30th Street studio, a former church in midtown Manhattan, recording the variations.
Columbia quickly realized that they had not only a world-class musician but a world-class eccentric on their hands.

In 1948, Columbia gained a formidable edge on its competitors with the introduction of long-playing 33-1/3 rpm records (in 10" and 12" formats), establishing a new industry standard that would hold for almost 40 years.
Columbia Masterworks continued to be the label's flagship line, developing a stellar roster of musicians that included Isaac Stern, Pablo Casals, Glenn Gould and Vladimir Horowitz, as well as Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy and Bruno Walter.
Lieberson was also a pioneer in the recording of Broadway musicals, winning Masterworks its first gold record for the original cast recording of South Pacific, and making commercial history with the bestselling original cast recording of My Fair Lady.

Most, if not all, of the original Gold Bordered releases listed below, as well as those without borders, released from 1972-1974 did not have the "P" price code prefix printed on the jackets.
In 1974, when Columbia increased the list price on thier LP product, the CQ, EQ, and ZQ prefixes for single LPs became PCQ, PEQ, and PZQ respectively.
To reflect this price increase on the older stock that had yet to ship, and to save the cost of reprinting jacket graphics, stickers with the new catalog number were printed and affixed to the jackets (see graphic above).
