He graduated from Indiana Asbury (now De Pauw) University in 1845, was president (1846-1847) of the newly founded and short-lived Iowa City College, studied law, was first superintendent of public instruction in Iowa in 1847-1848, and was president of Iowa Wesleyan University in 1853-1855.
He took a prominent part in organizing the Republican party in Iowa, and was a member of the United States Senate from 1855 to 1865, when he became secretary of the interior.
He was county judge of Franklin county in 1858-1859, was an unsuccessful candidate for Congress on the Whig ticket in 1859, and was elector on the Constitutional Union ticket in 1860.

Its name was changed to Columbian University in 1873 and to The George Washington University in 1904.
Since then, under the leadership of university presidents Lloyd Hartman Elliott and Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, it became a major undergraduate and graduate institution and grew immensely, and presently is the largest private landowner in the District of Columbia, and second largest overall (behind the federal government).
In June 1999, the university purchased the Mount Vernon College for Women near Georgetown, and it became the George Washington University Mount Vernon Campus.

Another important event in the life of Columbian College occurred in 1888 when the first Doctor of Philosophy degrees were awarded, in course, to Andrew Montague, Professor of Latin in Columbian College and to James Howard Gore, Professor of Mathematics and German in the College.
In 1904, when the University became The George Washington University by an Act of Congress, the Department of Arts and Sciences was reorganized with a Faculty of Graduate Studies and a Faculty of Undergraduate Studies that included Columbian College.

The George Washington University began in 1821 as the Columbian College, in the District of Columbia.
Columbian College was located on forty-six acres (then known as College Hill) between the present Fourteenth and Fifteenth Streets and beyond Columbia Road, then a rural area.
In 1898 the Trustees successfully petitioned Congress to revise the charter to compel Baptist control of Columbian University by requiring the President and two-thirds of the members of the Trustees be members of Baptist churches.

The university has three campuses: The main campus in Foggy Bottom, the Mount Vernon campus in northern Washington, DC, and the Virginia campus in Ashburn, Virginia.
The university also owns land and buildings around the Foggy Bottom campus that are not used for academic purposes; these include the mall at 2000 Pennsylvania Ave, and the land under the International Monetary Fund building.

His drawing and rendering skills had already been recognized in architectural competitions while at the University, where he received a first mention in the University's traveling scholarship competition and a first mention in the Rome Prize competition of 1894.
Finally in 1895 he was awarded the University of Pennsylvania's Traveling Scholarship for his design for "A Bank for Savings." This scholarship enabled him to study at the American Academy of Rome for the year 1895/1896, followed by a year in Paris in the ateliers of Godefroy and Freynet.
In 1902 he was appointed a part-time Professor of Architecture at George Washington University (then known as the Columbian University).

He resigned from the army in 1881 to devote himself entirely to scientific research.

At a state university in the southeast, Trotter (1982) found that the alcoholic beverage most often drunk by males was beer (75%) followed by liquor (21%) and wine (4%) while that most often drunk by females was liquor (64%) followed by wine (20%) and beer (16%).
Among students at a large midwestern university, men were more likely to drink beer and straight liquor while women were more likely to drink wine and mixed drinks (Keane and Swinford, 1984).Beverage preferences in England and Australia appear to be consistent with those generally found in the United States.
Reiskin and Wechsler (1981) found that in a sample of students at an urban university in New England, 71% of the men and 54% of the women reported being intoxicated at least once in the previous year.

 Record Unit 7471 - George Washington Memorial Association, Records, 1890-1922
The George Washington Memorial Association was organized in 1898 for the purpose of establishing in Washington D.C. an educational institution for the "promotion of science and literature" as described by George Washington in his messages to Congress and in his will.
Plans for building on the site fell through (though Columbian did rename itself GW University), and the association then joined with the Smithsonian to build a multipurpose structure on the mall that would serve as a memorial to George Washington.

The university's student conduct code usually enforced only on campus will also apply this year to student behavior off campus, vice president for university relations Mike Oman said Tuesday.
That means the university will hold students accountable for off-campus behavior that puts themselves or others at risk of injury, results in property damage or violates drug and alcohol laws.

Mason had begun his professional career at his alma mater, Columbian University (now George Washington University), where he spent the middle third of his life (1861-1884) as a teacher and principal of the preparatory department.
In 1884, Mason left Columbian University, where he had worked his way up to "Professor of Anthropology," to become the Smithsonian's first full-time curator of Ethnology.
In 1902, he became acting head curator and, in 1905, permanent head curator, of the Department of Anthropology, serving as curator of the department until his death in 1908.
