Columbine Mine massacre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Columbine Mine Massacre occurred in 1927 when striking coal miners in Colorado were attacked with machine guns.
The strike was five weeks old and strikers had been conducting morning rallies at Serene for two weeks, for the Columbine was one of the few coal mines in the state to remain in operation.
At least two, and possibly three machine guns were available at the mine and miners later claimed their ranks were decimated by a withering crossfire from the mine tipple-- a structure where coal was loaded onto railroad cars-- and from a gun on a truck near the water tank.

Columbine may matter a lot politically, as attested to by the frenzy to exploit the anniversary of that day when two students slaughtered 12 classmates and a teacher, injuring 23 others.
Yet the real lesson of Columbine is that very few people care enough about the horrible events of April 20, 1999, to try to prevent their recurrence.

Significantly, no police or mine guards were shot; the standing order in the IWW was to leave all weapons at home or at the union hall, so the miners carried no guns.
The slaughter of miners at the Columbine Mine marked the last significant industrial action of the period conducted by the IWW, but it also became the catalyst for change in Colorado's coal mines.

S tung by mounting criticism, lawsuits and now judicial rulings against a yearlong policy of selective silence about the Columbine High School tragedy, the Jefferson County sheriff's department abruptly reversed course Wednesday and began distributing a bloody, music-backed video tour of the massacre site directly to the public at $25 a pop.
Victims' families, outraged, accused the county of gross insensitivity and possibly even retaliation for the nine lawsuits filed last week on behalf of 15 families against Sheriff John Stone, the department and the county.
It charged that a friend of Eric Harris' father in the sheriff's department squelched a search warrant that could have averted the massacre; that students were needlessly trapped in the library for slaughter; and that Dan Rohrbough was killed by a sheriff's deputy rather than by Harris or Dylan Klebold.

The facetious title of course stems from the 1999 Columbine school massacre in Littleton, Colorado, in which two students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, killed twelve of their peers and one teacher before killing themselves.
Where BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE finds new ground in the gun debate is in interviews with Matt Stone, the creator of “South Park” originally from Littleton, and rock star Marilyn Manson, who received much blame for warping young minds after Columbine.
Despite its intriguing ideas, BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE unfortunately ends with its weakest segment as Moore goes to interview a dithering, old Charlton Heston, who plainly has no clear ideas on anything related to gun violence.
