Columbite is the most widespread niobium mineral and makes for an important ore of the industrially useful metal.
Columbite is the more niobium rich end member and tantalite is the more tantalum rich end member.
However the end members are recognized as distinct minerals although collectors have found this to be rather cumbersome and generally prefer columbite to the non-unique names of ferrocolumbite, manganocolumbite and magnocolumbite.

Results show columbite / tantalite occurrences with associated high rare earth, base metal, Mn, U and W concentrations are related to pegmatites in granites in an oval 10km wide area, broadly ringed by basaltic to doleritic intrusions.

Greater than 3 wt% Nb2O5 and >5 wt% Ta2O5 are required for columbite saturation in strongly peralkaline granitic melts (A.S.I. 0.55), whereas >1000 ppm Nb2O5 and >5000 ppm Ta2O5 required for saturation in subaluminous to peraluminous granitic melts.
Columbite solubility is strongly dependent on temperature in subaluminous to peraluminous melts, e.g.

 Niobium Summary
Columbite and pyrochlore are not mined in the United States.
Hatchett found niobium in columbite ore that was sent to England in the 1750s by John Winthrop, the first governor of Connecticut.
There was a considerable amount of confusion about the difference between the closely-related niobium and tantalum that wasn't resolved until 1846 by Heinrich Rose and Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac, who rediscovered the element.

The parameters studied in the mixing/grinding step were the sifting of the oxide precursors and the initial mixture, the reactivity of the raw materials and the grinding time.
This study involves samples prepared by the columbite method with variable percentage of niobium oxide (V), and confirmed the influence of this oxide on the formation of pyrochlore phase.

It's Elemental - The Element Niobium
The columbite sat in the museum's mineral collection for years until it was analyzed by Charles Hatchett in 1801.
Hatchett could tell that there was an unknown element in the columbite, but he was not able to isolate it.
Niobium was rediscovered and renamed by Heinrich Rose in 1844 when he produced two new acids, niobic acid and pelopic acid, from samples of columbite and tantalite.

I'll attempt in this story to give a less depressing account and a more technical view on the circumstances of mining the mineral of Columbite-Tantalite found in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as well as a little on Diamonds that are concentrated mainly in the south of DRC.
Columbite and Tantalite are related minerals, in fact there is complete solid solution between both end members.
Tantalum is used in alloys for strength and higher melting points, in glass to increase the index of refraction, and in surgical steel, as it is non-reactive and non-irritating to body tissues.

Additional Notes: Columbite forms a series with the mineral tantalite.
Columbite is the end-member with more niobium (at one time niobium was called columbium, hence the name columbite); tantalite is the end-member with more tantalum.
Since columbite and tantalite exhibit very similar properties and since a detailed chemical analysis is generally needed to distinguish the two minerals, specimens from the series are typically referred to as "columbite-tantalite."

Recent investigations have revealed illicit mining of Columbite and that a large-scale illicit mining operation of the said mineral is being carried out under a prospecting licence for gold and another group involved in a similar illicit operation is now known to Government.

This will apply both in the Northern and Southern Provinces where illicit mining of COLUMBITE and gold has been reported to be alarming.
